anyone still watching The Gates?

Temis the Vorta

Fleet Admiral
Admiral
Of all the summer shows I've stuck with to see if they would stop sucking, The Gates isn't the one I would have pegged as the winner. But over the past couple of episodes, it's improved to watchable levels. Has anyone else hung in?

Then I won't tell you a) why The Gates got better and b) why Persons Unknown got worse...both happened w/n the past couple eps.

I've stuck with it but honestly the best I can say about it is that is just merely okay. It isn't bad or boring enough that I've lost interest in it but at the same time it isn't solid enough that I'm truly invested in it waiting for the next episode.

The other thing against it is the fact that it is a summer series and most summer series never return the following summer when it comes to network tv so that's probably another reason I'm not that crazy about it.

Interestingly enough I think it has more of the right ingredients than a lot of tv shows in recent years but it just isn't executing everything in a compelling manner. It strikes me as wanting to be a supernatural soap opera but it is nowhere near as interesting storywise or characterwise the way really good soap dramas are. It also wouldn't hurt to become a bit tighter in its storytelling--a lot of the show feels aimless and often seems like it is building towards some place interesting then it just fizzles.

I admire networks for wanting to try to give audiences something in the summer to watch that aren't reruns but nothing has caught my attention--not Haven, not True Blood, not Scoundrels, not Covert Affairs, not Memphis Beat, not Rizzoli & Isles. The only thing I have enjoyed have been reality tv shows--yeah so sue me--The Real Policewomen of Memphis, Wife Swap, 48 Hours Mystery and What Would You Do?. I also gave Persons Unknown a second chance when a friend said it got better but it still is corny, lacking story logic and the characters are bland and some of their actions are flat out Heroes-worthy in their stupidity--the only interesting thing is Kandyse McClure as some tough lesbo prison chick.

I'm still watching--and was pleased by the recent plot development regarding the sheriff (he said cryptically). That should help it avoid one of the mistakes WOLF LAKE made . . . .

I was thinking The Gates was downright unwatchable - the vampires and werewolves are just boring iterations of character types we've seen many times before - and let's face it, a succubi is going to be a very one-note character. I was on the verge of just giving up altogether. I changed my mind because of the "plot development" regarding the sheriff.

I like fact that Nick now has to deal with knowing the town he patrols is crawling with supernatural critters. How exactly does he carry out his law enforcement duties in a situation like that? So that throws a reasonably fresh twist into an otherwise very well worn premise. I'm also curious how long Marcus can remain totally clueless.

As for Persons Unknown, I liked it okay at first but now I'm not so sure. The big mystery is trending towards an explanation that is far too tired and trite for my tastes.

Big Global Conspiracy again? Too many shows have trotted that out, and it never comes off as remotely plausible.

its alright... its one of my current "wallpaper" shows, like Haven & V whenever it returns...

its got the least annoying teens Ive seen on a genre tv show...Ill give it that.

I have the entire season to date stacked on my TiVo. I was just waiting for some conversation somewhere to see if it's worth watching. It seems no one is talking about it.

If Temis says it's watchable, I'll have to take a look.

Still watching it but it's a bit soap-y for my taste. I thought the latest ep's development with the safe could prove interesting.

After a slow and discouraging start, this show is shaping up surprisingly well.

Last night's episode just dispensed with a nagging logic problem - why would Nick continue to expose his family to risk, even if he feels an obligation to repay Dylan for sticking his neck out?

Also Nick probably likes having a community that will value his contribution as a cop. These vampires might think they have things figured out, but they behaved like a vigilante mob, almost punishing an innocent person for a crime she didn't commit. (And I love the irony - the cop has to make sure the vamps don't go overboard with their ide of "justice.")

Underneath the annoying DH-ness, there's a smart show buried somewhere... They really need more plotlines w/the witches - they need to battle each other - and Nick needs to find out that Peg (the good witch) is another potential ally).

The bit with the facial masks was really creepy. I'm curious to see what the Bad Witch has in store. I suspect it's not going to be pretty.

I dumped this along with Persons Unknown. Now I'll just wait until the new fall season starts to watch a show regularly. The summer stuff just sucked.

Given the whole DH tone of the show, rapid aging probably. EEK! :rommie:

This show is better now because apparently they forgot there were werewolves. I guess that can't last. Seriously, what can you do with werewolves?

^walk them? :)

I think the masks might be involved with shapeshifting(Mystique style, not Sam Merlott style). Imagine all the chaos she can do with that power?

I still like these teens... I mean where in this day & age can you see teens discussing Charlotte Bronte on a network tv show?

I'm checking it out still. It has improved. As a summer series or a limited series, I think it works. But I wouldn't want it going much longer than that, without a little bit more sex and biting.

When I first watched the show it was the second episode. It seemed like it would suck pretty hard(I didn't know what was going on). Then I watched the pilot and it was a little better. Now me and my girlfriend are in to the show, but I don't love it with a passion or anything. Isn't the Succubus girl going out with the annoying flying kid from Heroes? I still don't like him.

But they haven't - did you miss the funniest exchange of the ep? After werewolf mama suggests that Claire could use a facial because she's looking so old and worn, Claire offers to sell her a SILVER necklace and werewolf mama pales rapidly. Check and mate! :D

The show is still overly-soapy for my taste... but yeah, there's a potentially good show underneath. I just worry it's like FlashForward where the cast is too big too quickly and the show is just a little too big for itself.

.

Actually, the werewolf lady made a snide crack about how much sunscreen the vampire was wearing, but, yeah, that was a cute bit.

That was funny and I do like Mama Wolf but overall, I'm not sure they have a good plan for how to develop the werewolves.

No - Milo's at least a decade older than that guy but they do look kinda alike. The guy in this show makes me uncomfortable the way he stares.
