anyone still watching The Gates?

Last night's ep was okay I guess. Frank's wife's lecture was unnecessary (but very typical of networks with no faith in the intelligence of their audience) - we get that Nick's gonna stay out of a mixture of personal loyalty and professional pride. Thanks for the sledgehammer, vampire lady. :rommie:

Ah, but that speech served two purposes. It also explained why Devon is out to destroy The Gates. If the whole reason that Frank decided to make The Gates a sanctuary for "different" folks is because he fell in love for a vampire, no wonder his bitter ex-wife is stirring up trouble . . . .

It seems very clear now that Devon is the Big Bad of the series . . . .

I wouldn't have minded Frank being bad as well or at least baddish. He can be in luuuuv with his vampire wife and also be a twisted control freak who likes to blackmail people.

So . . vampire blood, werewolf eyes, facial masks . . . exactly what kind of spell is Devon brewing?

My first thought was a golem. I know it doesn't make sense, but that is where my mind went.

I don't think she needs a spell to set the vampires against the werewolves. They are close to doing that on their own.

A race war between vamps and wolves, eh, sounds like a silly idea. Then again it beats more desperate housewives/teen angst silliness.

What happened to the young cop guy, Marcus? He's one of the few adults in the cast who are clueless about what's going on, besides Sarah, and she's bound to figure things out pretty soon when she realizes there's no such thing as crack cocaine in tea form. :rommie:

My guess du jour is that she can change the facial mask owners' appearance by mixing it with the other stuff, but they won't realize they look different. That should be good for a laff. :D

One of my favorite things about the show so far is the depiction of vampires. There seems to be a pretty big difference here compared with vamps on other shows. Dylan and Claire have recognizably human morals and emotions. They seem to act a lot like regular folks who woke up one day and discovered they have a digestive system that requires cannibalism to survive. They don't act like they've transformed into a different, nonhuman species. Christian seems to be a normal human with an amoral point of view rather than a vampire with a vampire point of view. So far, Vanessa doesn't act at all "vampiric." The vampire that Nick rescued from the false accusation of murder was also very sweet natured.

It's an interesting difference and consistent with the overall approach that the supernatural characters are all essentially human in outlook. The fun part in this is watching the vampire be the responsible one ("shouldn't we get a court order or something?") and the regular human is the ruthless guy ("shut up and dig"). The solutions to the murders so far have also pointed the finger at the homicidal nature of regular humans.

The danger is that the supernatural characters might lose their edge. I think we need a scene pretty soon to reinforce that, yes, Dylan can be a very dangerous guy.

I like the concept of a vampire couple trying to raise a human child. Will they turn her eventually?

also wonder about that female cop with the mystery box...

I don't think so, and that's another way the vampires in this show have human perspectives - they give me the sense that they accept that they are "abnormal" which is very different from vampire stories where the vampires accept themselves as having a valid alternative lifestyle, maybe even superior to stupid little humans.

Me too! No idea what that's about. Is it something that represents her "true self" such as a soul?

Devon's spells seem primarily intended to control people's actions through a piece of them (blood) or an impression of them (facial masks) or what they ingest (magic tea). But she seems to be set up as the classic scorned woman and her only motivation may be revenge - probably against all the vampires, but the wolves are not likely safe either.

This ep seemed a bit more filler than others, though granted some important stuff happened - the teen monsters revealed themselves to one another, Claire and werewolf-mama came to a detente over protecting cop-wife from Devon, Frank's reasons for defending The Gates were explicated. LOL I still think it's not a good sign that, just like FlashForward, I'm halfway through a season and still can't remember most of the characters' names. :(

And LOL just realized that Robert Wolfe is now working on a second show with a character named Dylan. :D And I'm guessing it was his casting suggestion to bring Blackthorne in after working with him on The Dresden Files.

The names sort of suck. A vampire named Dylan? A cop named Marcus? A werewolf named Brett? Devon and Dylan are too close and I've seen people get them mixed up.

Hmm - is next week the season finale already? The ratings have gone up a tick. I wonder if that's enough to prompt ABC to bring it back, maybe for midseason.
