Bit disappointed that the 2010 and 2011 movies will be sequels to movies I didn't like.

How is that possible? Because Disney is adding a several hundred million dollar "Carsland" addition to its pathetic, struggling "California (Mis)Adventure" theme park in Anaheim. Based, if nothing else on the billion dollars plus of merchandise sales this film has generated, they saw fit, in their further goal of "kiddifying" the parks to add a section based on something the little darlings would go ga-ga over.

THAT is why we are getting a sequel and a VERY large section of a theme park based on this film.

Because Cars made more money from toy sales than movie ticket sales. I don't recall seeing THAT many Mr. Incredible action figures out there. So they're gonna make the sequel that sells the most toys.

Yeah, Cars was an insane merchandising machine that still takes up considerable amount of shelf space in stores.

As for Up, Pixar has yet to do wrong. Wall-E was the finest film they have made to date, and I'm always incredibly eager to see what they have to offer next. Up looks like it's going to adhere to the same standard of charm and fun that previous entries have.

I'm sure Up will be really good. The trailers for Cars, Ratatouille, and WALL-E didn't impress me much, but all three turned out to be really good films.

It's never dealt with at all. It's a universe exactly like ours except all lifeforms are cars. With very few revisions it could be a standard flick with human characters. The reasons why there are sentient cars are unimportant. It's just a hook.

The question there is, from a creative standpoint, what exactly is the purpose of the movie being about talking cars instead of actual people? Well, aside from all the pretty metal shader work.

Star Trek was just an updated Western. What was the reason for doing that? They could have just left the Klingons as Indians and been done with it.

I mean, I'm glad they didn't, but you're really asking why they would have thought to do that? What's the point of Shrek? Lady and the Tramp? Toy Story? Wall*E? Those ALL could have been done with people. You're questioning the existence of the sci-fi/fantasy/childrens' genres? I mean, if you don't get it, I don't think it can be explained.

Because pretty clearly they used the canvas of scifi as part of the actual stories presented. You could not have translated Star Trek into a western with a few simple rewrites. You'd have to majorly hack out large segments of the stories and characters... and explaining any of the episodes that had energy beings would have been difficult

Taking other Pixar movies at the very least, most of them could not be translated to human stories with a few simple rewrites. Certainly not the Toy Story movies. Or Monsters Inc. Ratatouille certainly not. Finding Nemo could be done but it would take a lot of major work. If you think that I'm questioning the existences of scifi/fantasy genres then I don't think you're really understanding what I'm getting at. If you tell a story about talking cars where you don't actually leverage the fact that they're talking cars to be useful from a creative standpoint, then there is no point to it. If you do... well then obviously there is. As I said before, I haven't actually seen Cars so I'm pretty clearly at a disadvantage but based on what I've heard about the movie and the things posted in this thread it doesn't seem like they actually leverage that at all... other then to sell toys. And sure, Disney is a business so I can't fault them for that... but it doesn't mean that I want to see it either.

But the four movies you picked as examples... well, all those movies did have people in it. And the characters in it who weren't human were therefore partially defined by that on both an actual and thematic level. If you want to make a movie with talking cars in it then I say make it be our world and leverage that as a concept. Which is basically exactly what Toy Story did. If you removed the people (who didn't even know the toys could talk) or just make the toys people you completely gut the movie.

My thoughts exactly, and right now, Wall-E is my absolute favorite movie, and I mean of any movie. I swear that movie touched me on a spiritual level and resonated so deeply with me. When I finally get a BluRay player, Wall-E will be the first disc I buy.

I agree. I'm sick of Pixar. I miss old animation and real characters. Of course I was sick of Pixar as soon as Nemo's father started saying "Nemo! Nemo! No Nemo!" like an ass over the course of that whole film. Life is too short!

And for all of the people that didn't see Cars-Paul Newman does the voice of Doc and carries enough gravity to keep what could have been a joke movie firmly grounded. I think the Incredibles and Toy Story were the best of the bunch otherwise but they were all pretty good. I like CGI flicks-it lets the animators run wild in unexpected ways. UP! I'm not sure about-but you can't tell until you actually see it. An opinion formed from a basis of ignorance reflects that upon which it is based. I'll wait and see.

It's not a "hatred" per se, but more of an "enough already". Well done cel animation has a natural grace and fluidity to it that CG just doens't have. It's warmer, not as sterile, and you can do the most amazing things with lighting and atmosphere that you just can't duplicate in CG.

And the stories they choose for the Pixar films just seem so small and cheap, lacking both bredth and scale. Put something like "Cars" up against "Little Mermaid" or "Alladin" or "Oliver and Company" and tell me there isn't a UNIVERSE of difference between them...

While I like Pixar, I too kinda wish Disney would go back to the "big" movie during the summer each year. I mean when Lion King came out, that was an event. That was Disney at it's best, with families going with their kids on opening day and just Disney saying, Here is our big movie for the year. That roll they had with Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Lion King, and Mulan was awesome. Now Pixar is coming out with a movie every year and while that's cool, it's not anywhere close to approaching that roll Disney was on.

I think this is also the problem I have with increasing CGI, and new technology. When movies like Aladdin and The Lion King came out, there is a ton of care and love for those movies. With Pixar, it feels like they are just doing it now to fill a quota. Granted, I love the Pixar movies too, but when will be the next big thing for disney to display at the theme parks. What will be the next big song that will resonate with people for years to come like "Can you Feel the Love Tonight" or "A Whole New World."

I was looking forward to it but Ive been a bit disappointed at some of the leaked art Ive seen of it. Some of the designs look very generic.

as for Up, it does seem a bit meh but I felt the same about Monsters Inc & Cars & they eventually grew on me... I havent missed seeing a Pixar film on the big screen since Toy Story & dont plan to stop now...
