Any chance of an X-Men 4? Ever?

Of course not. They would have filmed it already. But dang it, I would really like to see a follow-up on the twist found after the end of the credits of X-Men: The Last Stand, but now Fox just keeps making X-Men prequels.

Lauren Shuler-Donner, producer on all the X-Men movies thus far, did an interview with the LA Times a few months back with Bryan Singer (who was then attached to direct X-Men: First Class) about a desire to do X-Men 4. Singer said he was interested, but only after First Class. Since Singer isn't directing that anymore, I think there's a good chance an X4 is likely but probably still sometime down the road.

X-Men 4 along with Wolverine 2 are still happening (in fact they're searching for a director for the latter right now and Tony Scott was rumored to be on the short list before he chose Mark Millar's Nemesis). I see X4 happening in the next couple of years.

Why? Sure, great, Xavier's still alive in a new body. Mags may even be getting his powers back. So, apart from losing Cyclops, the net effect of X3 is zero.

Except it's worse than that, because we wouldn't be able to forget about X3 anymore. We'd actually be asked to buy crap like one mutant, however powerful, can move the whole Golden Gate Bridge. The whole White House/mutant showdown so promisingly foreshadowed at the end of X2 is tossed down the drain, with a new older white dude who may well be the blandest POTUS ever put to film. And we can no longer forget about Wolvie having become an overly soft, pep-talk giving X-cheerleader.

I for one wish that First Class would be a straight-up reboot, but while it's too early to tell for sure, it doesn't look as though they're necessarily going that way. And if it's successful, they're sure to want another as the actors would be contracted and cheap - and then why do an X4 to compete with FC2, and muddy the chronological waters? The likeliest X4 scenario may be after a crash-and-burn from FC, but even then, the challenges would be numerous and significant.

Mostly, though, I'd like to see X3 forgotten and not sequelled, as a lesson to the studios: even if audience goodwill for the previous movies means you make buckets on a rushed, crappy-ass sequel, there will be a long-term price to pay for poor product.

Net effect of X2 was Jean Grey dying but not really dying. And Nightcrawler...who didn't return the next movie, but might have if Singer had...maybe.

It's so dumb, like something out of a comic book! ;)

Accept the mutation machine from X-MEN? Rubbish! Cerebro being able to be used to kill millions/billions around the world? Or someone shooting beams from their eyes? Or creating ice? Or shape shift? Nonsense!!

If First Class arrives, and is even moderately well received. And X-Men 4 is not already in production, then any chance of seeing an X-Men 4 get made is gone.

Personally I doubt an X-Men 4 will happen because even with the downsizing of the cast in X3, it is still a large and expensive cast to assemble, and no writers that I know of have any sort of driving ambition to tell a story post-X3.

Which means the ball is in the suits court, and all they care about is money. Is X4 their best chance for major box office? I think they're banking on First Class, hence the rapid production on that.

It's a question of scale; I guarantee that Singer would not have included such a beat. Besides, without the support bases, the bridge would snap in two!

And Wolverine decides to let go of his past and move on, and Mags reveals himself as fully evil, and the X-Men decide, based on the school attack, that they're not safe from humans, and Jean definitively chooses Cyke over Wolvie, and... oh yeah... Xavier almost wipes out all of humanity.

Which reminds me... when he started that process, didn't he start killing humans? Watching the scene for the first time, I got the distinct impression that he had. X3 should have shown that Xavier killed millions of humans all around the world before he was stopped; instead, we got a president who was practically cuddly towards mutants. Talk about a massive cop-out fail.

@ Caliburn24: Indeed; I think you're dead on.

I don't think any X-Men films in the future are going to pick up where X3 left off. They backed themselves into a corner by having half the cast lose their powers.

I would rather see some first class movies (back to the basics is good), some X-Force, and even some Cable. There's tons of better stuff going on they could adapt.

Mags was already fully evil in the first movie. He wanted to mutate humanity regardless of the effects, and sacrifice Rogue to that end.

Every movie (except X-Men: Origins: The Original X-Man Wolverine's Origin) involves almost the wiping out of humanity...even X3...Jean Grey/Phoenix is so godlike she'd have done just that.

Considering the giant turd ratner laid with Last Stand and completely fucking-up the Phoneix stuff, I hope there's not another movie.

Aye, but he didn't know his mutation process was lethal; he thought he'd only be killing one girl. Which is evil and bad, yes, but not quite as evil and bad as trying to kill billions. ;)

My issue with that scene is, surely people who were driving a car, or having serious surgery, or flying a plane must have come to an unfortunate end during those several minutes of intense pain. Nothing is mentioned of this though...

I think a reboot would be neat if shown in a bit different and perhaps more... "Nolan-esque" "realistic" manner. For all that is worth. As much as I liked Singer's two movies they're a bit, I dunno... Goofy? Almost like they're kind of winking at the audience that they know this is silly or that they're trying to make an allagory to supressed groups of people? (Zach, have you tried not being a mutant?)

I'd like to see the subject taken a bit more seriously and dramaitcly and I think Nolan showed with his two Batman movies this can be done. And Rouge? She needs to be a hot red-head with a heavy southeren sassiness to her.

Not a pert brown-haired teenage girl with a mush-mouthed lisp.

A reboot with the original founding X-Men taking on Magneto and learning their powers but "modernized" would be in order if First Class flops at the box office. I still think we're going to get X4 in a couple of years despite them fast tracking First Class, they have always stated that this is not a reboot and takes place within established X-Men film continuity so it wouldn't affect them going ahead with either X4 or Wolverine 2 which they are. As JacksonArcher stated in his post Lauren Shuler Donner has given interviews saying they're very much interested in doing X4 they just don't have a plot right now and are focused on First Class which is why I believe there hasn't been any news on either of the two X projects I have mentioned in this post.

They may say that now, figuring they've got nothing to lose by saying, but if First Class is successful and gets two or three sequels, I think it'd be entirely plausible for them to go their own way and gradually and implicitly branch outwards from the X1-3 continuity.

Besides, they'll eventually want to bring Wolvie back, and Jackman can't be counted on to look (or even want) the part forever.

I think Wolverine 2 may well be the last gasp of the original X-series. After that, it'd make sense for Jackman to move on, and that'd in tun free Fox up to introduce a new Wolvie actor in FC 2 or 3.

Just because the first FC will be compatible with the orignal X-series does not, in short, guarantee that its successors will be.

If, on the other hand, FC flops disastrously, they may try to bring back the old guard for one last X4 gasp, and then build from there.

See, Donner and the producers are covering themselves either way.

No offense but you sound like you almost don't want a X4 to happen and I can understand why with the events of X3...I agree with most of your statements you made regarding that film. It was horrible and poorly executed with way too much going on. It seemed like it didn't know what it wanted to be about. Combining Joss Whedon's "The Cure" storyline with a modified "Dark Phoenix" saga was a bad idea imo.

I would love X4 to happen if Singer & Co. are involved and there aren't other X movies to take away from it.
