^ Yeah, I couldn't quite tell if he meant the Clairvoyant or Ian Quinn, but he was clearly not talking about Fury.
I don't recall any happening off screen. But the lack of a satisfying battle at the end of season one is the biggest criticism there. The only reason it wasn't the biggest criticism in subsequent seasons is that there were a lot of other problems to deal with. Heroes is not a show Marvel should want to emulate for the most part.
Did you watch Heroes? They were constantly building to epic super battles that either didn't take place or happened off-screen

The most famous example is (my memory grows cloudy) somebody (Peter and Nathan?) has this huge fight with Sylar and literally as they start to go at each other the doors close on them! I think Angela Petrelli is watching through a crack in the door or something? I think this was late Season 3?

And that's exactly what I meant too. One can't expect the first episode of a series to be this strong, because the feel and impact of this episode came from the fact that we've had time to get to know the characters and the world, so that the story beats have more impact than they would have if we were just meeting this cast for the first time. Also the fact that the actors and writers have had time to learn their characters' voices and get a feel for their relationships and rapports.
Then again, shows like Sleepy Hollow and Lost had great pilot episodes without taking most of a season to "invest in the characters".

Speaking of HEROES, Adrian Pasdar joins Agents of SHIELD as Major Glenn Talbot. Another and much more direct tie to the Hulk circle after the very minor Emil Blonsky/Abomination reference a few weeks back. Let's not quite yet toss speculation of The Leader out the window just yet perhaps? This is his first appearance in the MCU, the '03 Universal film doesn't count.
AoS also had, for better or worse, varied expectations due to it's ties to the larger MCU seen on film. Some knew what to expect going in, other found themselves disappointed that it wasn't capes and KAPOW every episode despite being told it wouldn't be that from the onset. We are getting there but as noted, where the show is now, it really couldn't have started there without investing in these characters separate from the MCU. Sleepy Hollow, LOST and the other hits can give you as much or little and you can take it or leave it without wondering why Iron Man doesn't just show up.
Those are exceptions to the rule and I myself would dispute that AoS "took most of the season" to find itself.

He was a commoner who enlisted, went to Earth then stayed put for the better part of a millennia. Sif is considerably more well travelled across the nine realms and is probably better educated in the various peoples of the cosmos.

That's like saying that because you're a commoner who's never been to Africa, you don't know what a giraffe or zebra looks like.
I really found both to be quite charismatic especially Lady Sif.
I agree with others who found Jamie Alexander's(?) performance as Sif to be filled ith charisma and presence. She made the character's stilted speech and haughty attitude seem perfectly natural and not at all phony or ridiculous. I was kind of blown away by the performance, actually. I didn't much notice her in either Thor movie, but boy did she stand out on AoS. She totally looked the part and handled the physical beautifully.
I loved the shot of her attaching her sword to her shield and putting it on her back before running into the building to confront Lorelei. I also loved her little fist across the chest salute to Coulson before leaving. The show is must see T.V. for me now.
I've lurked on this thread after a couple of early posts. I realized that there is a huge amount of Shield stuff that I was (and am), completely unaware of. I stopped reading comics in the mid-70's and even before that, ignored Shield. I was a Howling Commandos fan and I resented Marvel "selling out" and jumping on the trendy secret agent bandwagon. But I want AoS to be self referential and fan friendly as possible. I want the show to be pleasing to the hard core fans because the show will be that much better for it. I can eventually get up to speed.
Yeah, there was that moment early on in the ep where Skye was fishing for a compliment from him, and he didn't even seem to notice. I like Skye fine, but I'd much rather he be interested in Simmons than her.
I thought that Ward and Simmons showed a little chemistry in "FZZT".
I see more chemistry between Ward and Fitz, actually. It'd be interesting if they went in that direction.

Just like Lorelei isn't the Claiyvoyant just because Sif showed up in an episode, the Leader (or the Red Skull -- seriously, wtf are you even getting that idea from?!) or the Hulk, or whoever the hell else might be involved, isn't going to be the Clairvoyant just because someone from Hulk's comics is going to show up in an episode. Just like the Mandarin won't be the Clairvoyant if Pepper Potts makes an appearnce. Just like Crossfire won't be the Clairvoyant should Hawkeye ever make a cameo. etc.
