The Avengers wanted Shwarma...Loki wanted Chinese...the true reason for the Battle of New York is revealed....
S.H.I.E.L.D. tried to nuke New York.
America should have seceded from S.H.I.E.L.D. out right and immediately after that gem came to light.
Mind you, they did have a pair of green monsters tear up Harlem about a year previous and a swarm of robotic drones blew the crap out of the Stark Expo around the same time so maybe the blow was softened a *teeny* bit?![]()
Well that was actually my thinking about it. If word travels as fast in that world as it does in ours, most people would have already been aware of Thor and Hulk, and seen footage of them fighting some pretty crazy things like the Abomination and the Destroyer (since I really doubt SHIELD would be able to keep those events completely contained).
So by the time aliens arrived, people probably would have been much more prepared for the idea than we would be, who've never seen giant monsters and robots and all-powerful gods battling each other in the streets.

Wondering if The Winter Soldier ends up running with that little detail.

Some observations-- First, it was the World Security Council that tried to nuke NYC, not SHIELD. Second, Jenny Agutter played the WSC member who ordered the pilot to nuke NYC. Agutter will be in Winter Soldier as a subordinate to Robert Redford's "Alexander Pierce". Third, Redford has let slip that he is actually playing the villain of the piece (Robert Redskull?). So Winter Soldier actually just might pick up on that little plot point.![]()
Totally. Thor was an easy coverup, and considering the presence of so many agents and the way SHIELD scooped up Jane's van and research, the coverup was pretty obvious. The number of deaths would be absolutely irrelevant. Even if they did nothing more Earth-shattering than ordering Chinese takeout...
Oh come on! Chinese take out?! They'd obviously opt for Shwarma.
And, I actually think the events in "Thor" would be the ones most easily contained. The destroyer, the portal to Asgard, all of it. We're talking about a small, desert, town in New Mexico. Sure it'd probably generate conspiracy theories and such but it'd hardly be big news that reach most people. The stuff in "Thor" could have easily been contained by SHIELD.
Almost half the team is Scottish.

There was no way to cover up New York.
If anyone really doesn't get how much impact the Chitari had, I'd suggest going to the library and requesting a copy of a little book called "Childhood's End" by Arthur C. Clarke.
