The Battle of New York was the 9/11 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I expect them to mention it a lot.
9/11 and Pearl Harbor combjned times 1,000, 000. And it happened inside a year ago. So it makes sense it'd constantly be mentioned.

I think that might be stretching it a bit. We saw hardly any onscreen deaths in Avengers, and even the level of destruction seemed pretty minimal compared to most alien invasion movies we've seen.
Obviously an alien army descending from the sky is a major event, but even in that world I can't see it packing nearly as big an emotional punch as something like 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.
While watching video on demand, I did the sudoku puzzle in the daily paper. Didn't miss the time out from watching, which says something about the engagement this show inspires.
The scene with Squarejaw trying to do something spy-like, namely, manipulate another human being for information, was a painful reminder of how stupid the show is in its own professed terms.
SHIELD is not a spy agency, it is a band of thugs. This dreamworld where US gorillas get to stomp people all around the world is getting offensive.
Nerd and Nerdette still have no personalities, which says to me that their whole point is to be foils to make the leads look good.
The old rule used to be that a character with an exotically cool name, like "Sky," was given that name because the character was a Mary Sue. Or, just possibly, a thinly disguised erotic ideal. This show is not rising above fan fic with this character.
Does anybody really care how they reconcile this Coulson with Coulson's death in the Avengers move? Do you realize that unless there's a bunch of people who do, the relelentless emphasis on that is boring and inept?

Exactly what I thought when I heard it mentioned yet again. Considering what happened in that "battle", they are making as big a deal out of it as should be made. The Battle of New York was the 9/11 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I expect them to mention it a lot.
The Vulcan Science Directorate has determined that the existence of Charles Xavier in this continuity is impossible.I suppose it's possible that a certain professor in up-state New York has made sure that no such studies produced positive results, or made sure the successful ones weren't seen as credible.![]()

Beat me to it! The atomic bomb is the only thing that comes close to how world-changing recent events in the MCU would be.Compare 911 to Hiroshima.
She's Merry, he's Pippin.Fitz/Simmons (whichever)
and ScarJo's amazing ass in her suit.
What, you mean when SHIELD...uh...delivered the nuclear weapon to Iron Man? Yeah, that's the ticket....S.H.I.E.L.D. tried to nuke New York.
America should have seceded from S.H.I.E.L.D. out right and immediately after that gem came to light.

Also meant to say that I'm glad I'm not the only one who found this episode dull....

Liked the last two episodes. This Coulson thing looks like it may be headed for something big. Perhaps his former agent knows something about Coulson's personality that Melinda and the doctor and (Cobie Smulders), don't.
The last scene with Fitz/Simmons (whichever) made me laugh out loud. Considering how anxious he was to kick Agent Squarejaw's ass, he lit out so fast it wasn't funny when he thought Skye might see him naked. Funny.
Liking the Skye/Coulson dynamic too. Jury's still out though.
Mind you, they did have a pair of green monsters tear up Harlem about a year previous and a swarm of robotic drones blew the crap out of the Stark Expo around the same time so maybe the blow was softened a *teeny* bit?![]()
I know they seem determined to make this more of a spy series than anything else... but it's still only natural to expect a show set in the Marvel Universe to have some actual superheroes in it. The longer they hold out on actually showing us any (even some simpler, scaled-down versions), the more I think the general audience is going to slowly lose interest in this show.
I'm just not sure it's enough to have them chasing after mysterious artifacts, rogue agents, and random mutants-of-the-week.
The number of deaths would be absolutely irrelevant. Even if they did nothing more Earth-shattering than ordering Chinese takeout...
