    It was never explicitly stated but I believe that it may be at last several centuries old. The Cardassians have had warp drive for at least 500 years so they are a pretty well established civilization in the AQ.

    I'd like to see the Federation enforce the taxation of trade routes.

    And blockade any planets that don't pay their taxes :)

    Maybe with some of their ringships? :)

    Mercy me... I confess this might quite possibly be my nightmare scenario for the sequel :eek:

    It might very well be successful financially, but it's sooooo gimmicky, and it would guarantee another plot as convoluted as the one in the current movie.

    You are an evil genius of plot speculation ;)

    No, no, no! Wars will just mean eye candy and explosions. Besides, Star Trek, particularly the originals have had an anti-war theme where wars are narrowly averted. Its indicative of our generation that we want Star Trek to be about war so that the audience can sit watching it and be like "Americaaa fuck yeah!!!" world police style.

    DS9 managed to do war well because it had an entire series to expand upon it. Stand alone films wont do for a war story.

    Lets return to the theme of sci-fi and exploration.

    Doesn't matter. What's the difference between a war and an isolated battle if the movie is only going to focus on one ship and one crew, anyway?

    "Intergalactic" is an idea, though. Who's up for seeing the Kelvins on the big screen in all their giant tentacled glory?

    The planet became one in the 1800's, IIRC.

    In all honesty, on some level, I just don't see how you can do the story of James T. Kirk, in any continuity, without doing some variation of "The City on the Edge of Forever." It's a vital story that fundamentally informs the character, in my opinion; if you don't do some version of that story, then I almost don't see that you really have James T. Kirk.

    Er ... ah ..don't you mean intragalactic war? An intergalactic war would have the governments of multiple galaxies at war.

    War. Bigger explosions. More starship-shredding eye candy. Dude, you are so right! That's exactly what Star Trek needs.

    Nope, because I think the story works better if Kirk stops Bones from saving Edith than if Spock does. ;)

    How about this?

    Old Mirror Kirk (Shatner with a beard) comes back through a space hole and starts wrecking up the joint.

    How about Gary Seven and the aliens he works for as a villian?

    The idea has alot of things going for it. It would be a familiar villian from the show. He works for aliens we never saw which means we could see some really neat looking aliens in the new movie. Plus he has a bunch of kewl gadgets. I like the idea that he and Kirk are at odds as to how to prevent a wat between the Federation and klingons.

    I dunno. I'd like these new Star Trek films to be as mental as possible. Alien weirdness freaking everyone out. No bumpy foreheads.

    What the next film should have:

    * Space

    * The final frontier

    * The voyages of the starship Enterprise

    * An event from its five-year mission

    * Exploration of strange new worlds

    * Seeking out of new life

    * Seeking out of new civilizations

    * Boldly going where no one has gone before.

    Therefore: no all-out war. Let George Lucas keep that one.

    He's not quite villainous, is he? Actually, that could be a bonus.

    My pick for the role: William Fichtner.
