It's true Walter Koenig wasn't a cast member of TOS in season one, but Chekov's status as a crewmember of the Enterprise when Khan came aboard is/was unknown until TWOK. As plot holes go, it's barely a pin prick.ST Ii: TWoK has Chekov remembering an encounter between himself and Khan that couldn't have occurred as Chekov wasn't an Enterprise crewmember in TOS S1.
^^^
Given that (and other plot elements you could pilot a Starship through); it's still hailed as the best TOS cast Trek film.

Yeah TWOK doesn't contradict anything, it just reveals that Chekov was on board during season 1.It true Walter Koenig wasn't a cast member of TOS in season one, but Chekov's status as a crewmember of the Enterprise when Khan came aboard is/was unknown until TWOK. Did we EVER see him? No.Yeah TWOK doesn't contradict anything, it just reveals that Chekov was on board during season 1.
There is nothing in the canon that precludes Chekov being a crew member. There is never a scene where they state that he is new or recently transferred onto the ship.ST Ii: TWoK has Chekov remembering an encounter between himself and Khan that couldn't have occurred as Chekov wasn't an Enterprise crewmember in TOS S1.

O'RLY - please go rewatch the opening Teaser to TOS S2 The Trouble With Tribbles (in the Briefing Room.)There is nothing in the canon that precludes Chekov being a crew member. There is never a scene where they state that he is knew or recently transferred onto the ship.
just scanned a script transcript, not catching it. what am i missing?O'RLY - please go rewatch the opening Teaser to TOS S2 The Trouble With Tribbles (in the Briefing Room.)
Most authors agree that it's pretty important for stories!
FTFYSpace seed exactly as aired isn't canon anymore other than broad strokes thanks tostrange new worldsThe Next Generation. Chekovs presence is the least of the concerns now
Did we EVER see him? No.
Hence he wasn't on the ship in TOS S1 (per Occam's Razor)
No. The ship has 430 crew members. Of those we've probably see less than 100. Many of whom we see maybe once. Are we to assume that the other 230 don't exist or that the done in one crewmembers left the ship the next day?Did we EVER see him? No.

Yeah, perfection is admirable but rarely attainable. Here's the thing: a decent respect for continuity is a virtue, but it's not the only virtue nor even the most important one. It's a balancing act, and preserving the Sacred Canon is not necessarily Job One.
Is just mocking people who give a damn. And this kind of art is all about inspiring people to give a damn. All hail the continuity.

[Briefing room] SPOCK: Deep Space Station K7 now within sensor range, Captain. KIRK: Good. Mister Chekov, this flight is supposed to provide both experience and knowledge. How close will we come to the Klingon outpost if we continue on our present course? CHEKOV: One parsec, sir. Close enough to smell them. SPOCK: That is illogical, Ensign. Odours cannot travel through the vacuum of space. CHEKOV: I was making a little joke, sir. SPOCK: Extremely little, Ensign. KIRK: Mister Spock, immediate past history of the quadrant? SPOCK: Under dispute between the two parties since initial contact. The battle of Donatu Five was fought near here twenty three solar years ago. Inconclusive. KIRK: Analysis of disputed area? SPOCK: Undeveloped. Sherman's Planet is claimed by both sides, our Federation and the Klingon Empire. We do have the better claim. CHEKOV: The area was first mapped by the famous Russian astronomer Ivan Borkoff almost two hundred KIRK: John Burke. CHEKOV: Burke, sir? I don't think so. I'm sure it was SPOCK: John Burke was the Chief Astronomer at the Royal Academy in old Britain at the time. CHEKOV: Oh, Royal Academy. Well KIRK: is the rest of your history that faulty, Ensign? Key points of dispute? CHEKOV: Under terms of the Organian Peace Treaty, one side or the other must prove it can develop the planet most efficiently. KIRK: And unfortunately, though the Klingons are brutal and aggressive, they are most efficient. CHEKOV: I remember once Peter the Great had that problem like that. The UHURA [OC]: Captain? KIRK: Kirk here. UHURA [on monitor]: I'm picking up a subspace distress call. Priority channel. It's from Space Station K7. KIRK: Go to warp factor six. CHEKOV: Code One emergency. That's a disaster call. UHURA [OC]: This is a Red Alert. Man your battle stations. All hands. Not seeing it. Maybe Kirk's line about "provide both experience and knowledge."? Shows Chekov might be new to the navigation station, but not the ship. |

I give a damn but not about minutia. I'm not mocking people; I'm mocking an idea that I feel strongly gets in the way of enjoyment of the story, the characters, and adventure. What I have observed over the last twenty years is the singling out of single data points to exclude whole episodes in the name of continuity. And that, to me, misses the point of a story. That's not giving a damn about art; that's giving a damn to exclude aspects of art. Art is not religious in its nature and doesn't need canon or continuity to be enjoyable.
I don't mock people but I will mock ideas I find designed to diminish enjoyment.
I suppose so. I just don't see it as a wholesale rewrite.Small things versus major things. Gary forgot his middle initial. Vulcanians as a term went out of fashion. Shrug. I can get past that. Wholesale rewrites bother me.
