1960's and risqué clothes?

So, coming back around to the whole miniskirt debate, I reconnected with Andrea Weaver, who was the women's wardrobe person on TOS for the 2nd and 3rd seasons. She literally put (sometimes sewed) the women into their costumes, so she handled them daily.

She said that under the skirts they used "standard dancer briefs" [dyed to match the uniform], and that the the idea of some sort of leg panel or such is "completely unauthentic". We've seen our share up upskirt shots on the show and this seems to jibe with her description.

When asked about the uniform colors, she said the idea was to use primary colors: red, blue and green instead of yellow. The green was green (not gold or lime -nothing with yellow added). She explains that blue is a very unstable color—"especially in L.A." (presumably referring to the garment district)—and when you see uniforms decades on they have lost their blue AND faded, so you don't see the original color. You can see this in the blue uniforms as well, many of which have color-shifted towards a pale purple.

So there you go. From about as primary a source as you can get.
But did most or none or some of the women WANT to dress that way????????

We don't know one way or the other unless they talked about it in an interview or something.
But I think if you were seeing clothing onto various people each week, you might be talking while working. Women normally do that type of stuff, possibly she talked to them and they said various things about how they felt wearing the outfits.

Are you hoping Maurice will ask Andrea Weaver how the women felt about wearing the miniskirts and skimpy outfits? That would be interesting, but I don't know what kind of relationship Maurice has with her. Maurice?

Some women like Grace Lee Whitney liked wearing such outfits but maybe not all did! Some guest actresses had longer skirts I noticed so maybe they didn't? ;)

Nichelle Nicholas was also a fan. During the 80s films, she asked Bob Fletcher to come up with a mini-skirt version of the monster maroons.

Jan Shutan (Mira Romaine) said she was a little embarrassed in the costume, because (she thought) her thighs were too chubby. I think she looked extremely good.

This seems to be how the mindset changed over the '70s. Before the '70s, some women didn't like miniskirts, short shorts, crop tops, or the latest, smallest bikinis because they looked "fat". After the '70s, they hated them because they made them look "sexy" and therefore "like a serving of meat". I never could track the evolution.

I think there was some of that in both decades.

In many ways it doesn't matter what the actors/actresses think of their clothing. Unless its too painful or repulsive for their own morals.
What matters is what we the audience think of their outfits. Whether we can let ourselves believe these people on screen are believable in their roles and attractive and funny enough to watch them again next week.
Whitney and Nicholls have different motivations. They want to look attractive on screen. So they can keep in work. They probably don't care whether their character would be a functioning officer in mini skirts. As working stiffs they probably can't afford to.

Well it comes down to the individuals thinking.. Some women love dressing up sexy, for various reasons.. others are more conservative, or they have a body part they don't like being shown etc.
Take Elizabeth Olsen, shes was estatic that they didn't make her wear the comic Scarlett witch costume, with the corset and stockings.. she even is a bit edgy on the cleavage of the current costume.. Though on the other end.. She has appeared nude in film, and the future Wandavision showed a still with her in a Witch inspired bed room attire.. soo.. No idea..
But basically.. to each there own, and women, or men.. should't have to show more than they want to.

There was a beautiful Latina at work - reminded me of Eva Longoria - who reveled in dressing sexy. She had to wear a lab coat most of the time, but out of the lab (lunch and breaks), she was a glory to behold, and she apparently liked it that way. So did the men in the building! Maybe the other women didn't like it so much - she was eventually called down to HR and ordered to dress more conservatively. Alas. :(

This thread has no rails to jump off of, but my spidey sense is it's about to enter into another real of uncomfortably awkward.

From Nichelle Nichols' autobiography:

“In later years, especially as the women’s movement took hold in the seventies, people began to ask me about my costume. Some thought it “demeaning” for a woman in the command crew to be dressed so sexily. It always surprised me because I never saw it that way. After all, the show was created in the age of the miniskirt, and the crew women’s uniforms were very comfortable. Contrary to what many may think today, no one really saw it as demeaning back then. In fact, the miniskirt was a symbol of sexual liberation. More to the point, though, in the twenty-third century, you are respected for your abilities regardless of what you do or do not wear.”

She also asked for a skirt version of the TWOK-style uniform, which was finally seen on screen in V and VI.

It was first seen in SFS, during the locking of Mr. Adventure in the closet. Because she had the pants on on Vulcan, she had to wear those to Earth (Chekov got a pass because pink), so the skirt wasn't seen again until TFF.
