To elaborate, I quite liked Man of Steel, but am finding this a complete turn-off. Not just Affleck's casting - the whole thing just doesn't do it for me.

Weird how the panda-makeup always disappears when mask is taken off..

I think that in-universe, it's supposed to be part of the mask. But in the real world of movie production, it is achieved with makeup.

It doesn't inspire confidence in the film that the coolest thing they have to show us is obviously fake.

So very true. They want to get us excited for the film or whatever product. I remember in an Avengers AoU trailer, they showed Captain America's broken shield, but that was Tony's vision.
