To elaborate, I quite liked Man of Steel, but am finding this a complete turn-off. Not just Affleck's casting - the whole thing just doesn't do it for me.

If it's a nightmare/dream I feel better about it, of course.
I'm excited for the movie, but frankly much more to see the role Wonder Woman has in the story than the big Superman/Batman matchup.
I think that in-universe, it's supposed to be part of the mask. But in the real world of movie production, it is achieved with makeup.

I just go with it being a shadow cast by the mask which, naturally, disappears when it's taken off.

What I like about it is that it inverts some of the explicit Christ imagery seen in Man of Steel. Bruce Wayne is so broken that he sees himself as a Christlike martyr figure to the point that he's being hanged alongside two thieves and persecuted by Superman.
Ugh. Then Batman's dreams are boring. I would've expected a much more fucked up dreamscape for Bats.
Kind of lame to promote a movie like this with a scene that's just a dream. They don't have something interesting in the can that actually happens in the film to whet our appetites?
I'm sure they anticipated some people (including me here) getting all angsty about it.
Honesty has never been a priority among advertisers.
It doesn't inspire confidence in the film that the coolest thing they have to show us is obviously fake.
They're probably saving the coolest things (or what they consider to be such) for later teasers/trailers. Any given teaser these days is just one part of a whole advertising campaign, meant to build up a cumulative impression of the film. With nearly four months before the premiere, this is very far from the last word in the film's promotion. It's just one step along the road.

Hell, wasn't the broken shield used as a prop at the SDCC display? Might've been NYCC or somewhere else.
Although the scene appears to be a dream, I'm curious to know whether Batman really does have that sort of desert-fatigue outfit he wears in it.
