Spoilers Strange New Worlds General Discussion Thread

I stand before the incoming storm and wait. For I know what is coming after the above post. It will not be pretty. It will not be peaceful or quiet. It will linger for months perhaps, and those who experience it will have tales to tale for a millennia. If their are any children onboard look away. Your innocent eyes do not need to see what is coming. May whatever God you believe in have mercy on all our souls.

P.S. How the hell can you have a visually impaired engineer? The concept is cool but it becomes too unbelievable, too immersion breaking.

Hi. Please cool it on the ableism. First of all, like someone already said....we had Geordi... Also, this is in a sci-fi show with transporters and warp drive, and all that. Surely, they'd be ways to help visually-impaired folks work as engineers. Also, he was an Aenar, who had been shown to be able to perceive color, all that while being blind....due to Andorian/Aenar senses, in Enterprise.

Spock is ok but feels forced. Like ethan peck was not allowed to do his own take on spock. Instead he's pigeon holed. Fells like he's just imitating leonard nimoy at times.

Interesting take.

And by interesting, I mean completely divorced from reality.

Whether you like the performance or not is beside the point, you're just throwing together a bunch of words that bear no relation to the facts.

As for Pike. Adequate stature? How dare you. To speak such things of a man with a head of hair to make the angels weep. Hair of infinite depth and lusciousness. Hair with the most sublime separation. Sir, you are a cad.

I just marathoned the first season of strange new worlds. And like all of new trek. I hate it. It's just so mediocre. All flash, no heart, no soul. My biggest problem is with captain pike himself. He's a pussy. There are no other words to better describe him, than being a pussy. He's emotionally weak and weak of character. And let's others walk all over him. Dont get me wrong his physical stature is adequate. But his presence is not commanding like a captain's should be. I have no respect for him. I liked him on discovery(which was the only thing I actually liked about discovery). But here on his own show. I feel like they've neutered him on purpose. For humiliation. Like he cant be strong like previous captains were. (My favorite trek overall was TOS. Because it felt like an adventure in space. I felt like the crew actually respected captain kirk. I liked TNG season 1 because it felt like TOS. But season 2 onwards TNG devolved into pretentious technobabble. DS9 is my second favorite series. Solely for sisko aka space shaft. Voyager felt pointless. Enterprise wasn't bad. But not worth it. Only jeffrey combs as shram redeemed that series.) I dont like any of the bridge crew either. They're forgettable. Spock is ok but feels forced. Like ethan peck was not allowed to do his own take on spock. Instead he's pigeon holed. Fells like he's just imitating leonard nimoy at times. (Zachary quinto's spock felt too emotional for me.) And there is an overall lack of adventure. Going places doing things. The first episode was fine. But every episode after that felt mid. Except for the first servant episode. I liked how they couldn't save the day in that one. All the other episodes from season 1 felt like I'd already seen them before in other series. No take was original. It's like they recycled old episodes and ideas and put a new coat of pain. I did like the episodic nature of SNW though.

You'll do well here.

Oh, and did I mention, it's opposite day today?

What-evah.

Fifty plus years of Trek shows and you are just now complaining about redundancy.

Sorry, but that complaint left spacedock about thirty years ago.

Not really. What Pike does is effective leadership in recognizing his people's strengths and letting them do their best work, not micromanging at every level. Hard ass leadership is not always the best fit, and can create resentment in subordinates.

TMP waves hello.

Hmmm. Let's see. TOS Pilot Pike threatens to resign his Starfleet commission and run off to one of the Orion colonies whereas SNW Pike who's five to six years older and more mature actually views his actions in a wider context and doesn't completely overreact when he makes an error in judgment, weighing both the good and the bad and hoping that the next time will have better results. Which one is the more interesting character?

It's easier to scream that something sucks if you don't bother to even try to appreciate it. It's always easier and thus always less easy to take seriously.

Again, the idea of Star Trek is one that is expected to fit inside the nice and neat Star Trek box, one that has a specific style of leadership, style of acting and a specific presentation. If it doesn't fit then it's not worth while.

It's strange but yeah, it creates an easy way to dismiss.

Kirk himself mellows out as he gets older. The cowboy ready to throw both fists of 2268 isn't the same man we see in the TOS Movies. I suppose now TOS Movie Kirk is an emasculated shadow of his former self? Which I know is actually an opinion some fans have and I don't want to encourage more people to voice it, but still.
