Agents of SHIELD. Season 1 Discussion Thread

I would say that you can watch TWS without watching AOS.
But you will probably not be able to watch AOS without seeing TWS. Or at least without having the ending of TWS spoiled by the show.

Having seen TWS, I am even more excited about where the next few episodes of AOS are going.

Gary Shandling was also in Iron Man 2?

I wouldn't mind seeing a segment of his ongoing interrogation in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D..

She said: "when that plane touches down, take out everyone on board, except Agent Coulson.... he's mine".

She didn't mean take them out to dinner.
The ballgame, then? Well, okay, but "take out" could still mean non-lethally.

Ward shooting the guy was totally out of left field. I was waiting for some reason-- anything from he saw something nobody else saw to a post-hypnotic suggestion-- but apparently he was just upset. I hope this isn't some lame attempt to make the show "edgier." I have a feeling the only way out of this for him is that there won't be enough of SHIELD left to conduct a hearing.

Well, there is an obvious other explanation - he was acting under orders.
Possibly, but I doubt it. Unless it was under mind control, which would be a good defense, but not do much for his career.

However, assuming that's not the case, let's keep in mind that he touched the Berserker Staff. The anger you get from that supposedly lasts hundreds of years, so he's less likely to be the cool, calm, collected agent that started the show.
That's a good point. That would also be a good defense, but still not very good for his career.

I don't think it's about being "edgier," but that's a very vague term and can mean different things, so I'm not sure.
You know, the usual, bad-ass, hard-ass, lame-ass, shoot first and let god sort it out. Although it's true that the show treated it as both out of character and criminal. I think the only way he'll get out of it is that it will be a non-issue in the wake of the movie.

Skye Doe...?
Skye King?

Me too, and I agree with the above sentiment.

£20 ($30.60) for the season pass on iTunes, worth it? as it's pretty hard to catch any of the episodes on UK TV right now.

The first 90 seconds of "Turn, Turn, Turn". Very cool. Best open of the season.

I like Garrett's taste in music. :techman:

You know what that clip needs? More cowbell.

Are you watching all the episodes or just catching up to the remaining ones?

I've seen parts of the first 4-5, but here there have been gaps, time changes, etc so I can't rely on catching it on TV and it could be September before the DVD boxset.

Given that, it might be worth it. I'm assuming you can't watch it online locally (I realize ABC won't work where you are, but what about whatever station is broadcasting it)? I understand much of your question is related to the value of the product, but I'm just trying to think if it's cheaper to pay for episodes a la carte if you can watch some for free.

Has it been said that the next episodes will take place after TWS or are people just guessing at this point?

I'll see if I can find something specific, but you do have this:

What's next for the S.H.I.E.L.D. team?
Whedon: We will see what happens immediately after. Things got crazy at the end of Episode 116 and we continue that tradition in 117.
Tancharoen: There are even more surprises.
Whedon: And more questions to be asked. We're very excited about [next week's] episode.
Tancharoen: You definitely have to see Captain America in between.
Source (Some spoilers, I believe)

Interesting, thanks.

I don't think the CA:TWS snippet at the end of AoS last week was a time anchor - those events happened before anything Simmons would've noticed soldier-wise at SHIELD.

But as I've mentioned, there was an earlier "time anchor" with Agent Sitwell, though I misheard the line and have since read clarification elsewhere. After the briefing of senior agents on the Bus, Sitwell was told he'd been issued orders from the Triskelion and he said he had a boat to catch. And TWS opens with the SHIELD team raiding a ship (not a spoiler, since the scene was posted online a while back). So yes, TWS is evidently meant to begin during or shortly after the events of this episode.

Yes, I understand the timing from a broad perspective - I'd thought that we were shown the movie clip at the end of the episode to show that was *exactly* what was happening at that point in time.

After abandoning the show after episode 8, I decided to try to catch up to see if it got any better. I have no idea what happened, but I really enjoyed episodes 9-16. I don't know what its doing differently, if anything. All I know is that I watched the episodes over 2 days and enjoyed every one a lot, more than I've enjoyed most of the current season of Arrow. Heck, I even liked Skye, and didn't think Ward was that bad (although he's still a bit too bland at times). Maybe taking a break let me go back to the show with a fresh start and attitude toward it. Or maybe I was secretly kidnapped by ABC sponsored spies and programmed to like the show  Either way, I'm glad I gave the show a second chance, and I'll definately be catching it on TV from now on.

I can't really pick a favorite from episodes 9-16, there was a lot of cool stuff. I like Peterson as deathlock, and it was awesome to see the X-Ray look like the comic version. The Lorelei episode was pretty cool, and it was awesome seeing Sif. That is definately the right way to use a guest star from the movies on the show. The stuff with the Clairvoyant has been interesing, and I'm hoping that we get some answers by the season finale (which I'm assuming will be the case). I'm also hoping we get at least a small cameo from a movie character in the finale, but as long as the finale is good, I won't be too dissappointed if there isn't one.
