Great stuff, Frontier! Yeah, the difference between the upconverted still of Riker and Crusher and the rest of the stills is pretty clear, but when we're watching the episode in motion I don't think it will be too much of a bother.

The upconverted scene still looks far better than it did on DVD.

Re: special features wishlist for TNG-R Blu-ray

Just updated TrekCore with a couple of features about the only new bonus feature on the sampler disc - a preview of Season 1 on Blu-Ray. Full (unwatermarked) 1080p screenshots of the trailer are included with a few little surprises in there!

Plus - a first look at the cover art from Season 1:

Watch out for another exclusive this weekend, plus we'll obviously be covering the Sampler Disc with the usual slew of hundreds of Blu-Ray screencaps soon enough! :)

Great, as usual!

Is that a CGI Enterprise in that shot now, too? If it is the model, it looks a hell of a lot better in the new version compared to the old.

When I first saw that new shot of the energy grid without a comparison I could not see a difference. But, wow! Thanks for the comparison there!

Fairly certain its still the model, think it's the two footer? Looks a hell of a lot better without the all blue lighting on the dish and nacelles.

No, its the same model that was used in the original shot.

There are three models, the 6ft and 2ft by ILM and the 4ft made later by Greg Jein. The 2ft model was made for distant shots of the model and was never intended to be seen in great detail because it looks a bit.. off when compared to the 6ft model.

Are we sure that Qs energy grid needed to be redone completely? If they redid it, kudos, as it looks completely identical:

You can tell it's different. They changed some of the red bars into white ones.

No, that's the original footage of the Q energy grid. The difference in colour is either due to some changes in the transfer or the extra bloom effects blurring things.

How did they get that energy grid restored? Do they still have the files to re-render? Or is it somehow a filmed model?

Concerning the transporter effect:

I took a screenshot of the crew beaming down towards the end of "Encounter at Farpoint" and compared it to the "new" transporter effect as seen in the small screenshot currently online at startrek.com:

Now, compare the pattern of the transporter sparkles in the red rectangles. They are identical. You can see that the pattern is slightly larger in the HD shot and moved a little to the right. When the new beam down sequence was edited, the original footage of the sparkles was used and had to be applied to all four characters. This explains the minor difference. The sparkle animation is not completely in sync with the original sequence but it is definitely the original effect. When the Ten Forward scene was used in "These are the voyages" a completely new replicator/transporter effect was created; here, they stuck to the original! :-)

PS: As can be seen: there was no reflection of the transporter effect on the transporter pad floor in the original episode either.

Impossible, the video FX inserted after the fact had to be redone. What we are seeing is a beefed up but closely matching new effect.

The compositing had to be redone. The sparkles are film footage. That element was quite possibly retained.

To be fair, considering how the original effect is just fuzz - adding a quick blur and brightening it up isn't going to be jarring. They could have just as easily done that.

Seriosuly, you think they went back and used the original sparkle footage elements when the can just do it on the computer? I doubt it.

RAMA

The sparkles (actual sparkles in a water tank) were shot on film (in HD), so the original effect was still in the archive and could be re-used. As the sparkling effect (always the same pattern) had to be recomposited for each crewmember, they start at slightly different frames now, explaining why the effect doesn't match on a given frame for all 4 crewmembers. The effect, however, is exactly the same, as the original film footage of sparkles swirling in a water tank was used.

True, they didn't do it for the replicator beam in "These are the voyages", that effect was newly done on a computer. For TNG-HD, however, they did use the original footage.
