Matt Smith Reveals DW Departure Date

Interesting

In the new interview he says, “We work very long hours every day for nine months. The schedule is pretty brutal, but I’d never complain about it. I love playing this role, and I don’t want to give it up anytime soon.”

I think it's funny how grueling 14 episodes a year is for the British actors when the Yanks do 22+ episodes as a matter of course...

Well, considering some of the trash the US puts out... :p

In all seriousness - the USA has a one-week-per-episode thing going on; the UK it's more like two to three weeks. There are far fewer takes per episode in the USA I guess?

also, many US shows have bigger ensembles, so some of the actors probably do less work per-season, than something like Who or Strike Back where it's 3 main cast in Who and 3 or 4 in Strike Back.

Indeed, the average American show usually has a cast of no less than 5 main actors, plus a dozen or so supporting cast, and they're usually filming in a studio. Doctor Who, modern day has a main cast of two, sometimes three, with only a handful of supporting cast. I can easily see how 14 episodes could be just as (perhaps more than) 20.

There's plenty of two people shows (there's a small supporting cast in minor roles) like the X-Files or Castle or Bones...

I don't watch Castle or Bones, but the X-Files did have quite a few recurring characters who became as recognizable as Mulder and Scully and I think at times even had their own episodes.

Castle and Bones both have much larger casts than Doctor Who. Castle has at least 6, Bones has the same or more.
Also Doctor Who has much more location filming than most US shows.

Also, the unions in the UK have far more strict rules on how long people can work in the acting world. Don't remember what it is these days, but you certainly can't do 15-16 hour days like they do shooting in Hollywood. I remember some vivid stories from Dennis Skotak (VFX director) when they were shooting Aliens in the 80s. It wasn't just James Cameron who was getting really annoyed when the union guys called a 30-minute break every couple hours for lunch, a smoke, or tea.

They just happen to enjoy a jet-setting lifestyle, and they apparently think nothing of hopping a plane and flying to Los Angeles just because they can. :)
He's crazy. Why go to LA when you can go to any other country in the world that won't take nudie pics of you (or if you object, give you a complimentary anal probe) when you try to leave?

I dunno about that. Many so-called "straight" men have mentioned they'd like to have Captain Jack give them one ...

Well yeah. Barrowman could turn anyone gay.

How about Hercules and Xena? 22 episodes a season (26 for Xena's first) and guest appearances in the other show. Damn, that must have been harsh.

Xena and Hercules and probably Supernatural are probably the most comparable in terms of cast and location filming. Yeah, must be hell of a lot of work.
