Space Battleship Yamato

Blu-ray has different regions than DVD the north american region for BD is A the same as Japan, Europe is B. So If in Japan they released a BD of Yamato it would work in region A players although Japanese releases tend to not have subs and be hideously expensive imagine $50 for one volume of an anime with only 3 or so eps per disc!

no subs

Well, just ordered a supposedly region-free BD of Yamato: Resurrection w/ subs. Hopefully it will operate without issues, although, many of you know of my rather vocal disdain for the BluRay format. With any luck it will work and, if so, I will then have high hopes for the live action release, as it seems to have received better reviews than Resurrection did.

Managed to see the live-action movie today. I won't spoil it, but I thought it was VERY well done. You're used to a bit of cheese in Japanese movies, but they were able to keep it to the bare minimum here. Definately looked like a big-budget production that would stand right alongside any US effort. Characters were well done, and they did a fair job of compressing the entire first series into two hours.
They even managed to work in a few subtle nods for the long time Yamato fans.

The only thing is I found the very Japanese ending to be a huge let down.

Now that it has been released on bluray on Japan there are fan translated subtitles floating around the net now which would work if anyone is considering buying the buying Japanese bluray.

I would prefer to wait until its released on Blu-Ray here with official subtitles sometime in August and purchase it then though.

Should I try to watch the anime before I see this? The movie looks really cool, but I know absolutely nothing about the anime.
EDIT 1: just looked up Space Battleship Yamato on Netlix, and all they have are SBY: The Movie, SBY: The New Voyage, Farewell to SBY, Be Forever Yamato, and Final Yamato. Is that everything?
EDIT 2: I did find season 1-3 of Star Blazers though. So which would you guys recommend?

It was pretty good, especially if you were a fan of the anime. Visuals were excellent, the plot was OK, the Gamilons were transformed into something very modern and well done, the acting was good and several of the actors had considerable charisma. Very Japanese (though of course it should be) in that some action sequences would stop for a an extremely long melodramatic emoting session. Still, it was definitely worth a watch and I'm glad I got the chance to see it.

JD - If you can watch the original tv series (either Starblazers or the original, thats as good a place to start as any. To be perfectly honest, I thought most of the follow up movies were markedly inferior to the two tv series. Just rehashes of the same old 'aliens attack earth, destroy our space fleet leavign only the Yamato to save us' plot.

where did you pick it up? and are you in the us?

Lets just say it was from an 'alternative source' online.

And I really do plan on buying a subtitled version should it ever become available.

I really wish I could have seen this on the big screen. The Yamato launch in particular must have been amazing in the theater.

Also props to the film for a truely epic musical score. Wonderful versions of the original theme, with some new ones thrown in.

You can hear the full suite on Youtube.

So is it absolutely illegally impossible to show this in an American theater? Has anyone tried to get it?

Who would they contact in Japan?

Finally saw it with full subtitles.

Needless to say I loved it very much. IMHO it's the best live action adaptation of an anime out there.

after reading that I so want that movie in my hands or a digital copy will do.
and there better be a damn sequal in the works.

all so thanks for that link.

Has anyone said anything about a US Remake? Maybe if they are doing one, it could explain why there has been no word on a US release of the Japanese version.

Sigh...can we please keep Hollywood away from this. :(
