A James Bond Fan Reviews the Franchise

Nah, I think Felix tried to jump the shark... but we all saw how that worked for him. if you're not The Fonz, you're not The Fonz.

Watched the first ten minutes of ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE last night. Interesting how the credits sequence incorporates images from all of the previous films--as though to assure nervous Bond fans that this was still the same series, even though Connery was gone . . . .

If I remember correctly, Moneypenny comments that he is "still the same old James". There is also the scene where we see a few of the previous films props.

All right, ALL RIGHT!!!

I must have heard the behind-the-scenes look wrong.

Could've sworn that was what they said, though....*sigh*

I'm sorry you find the notion of a hollowed out volcano super base, a spacecraft that takes off and lands from said volcono base, a spacecraft that eats other space craft...believable? Not to mention the orbiting super laser in Diamonds, and the oil tanker that eats submarines and the secret base on the bottom of the ocean?

Heck one could even go back as far as Dr No and suggest No's nuclear powered base stretches credulity somewhat..

Those things certainly do strain credulity and require a lot of suspension of disbelief. But in the end, I can accept that maybe, just maybe, they could exist. Laser weapons and Space Marines, on the other hand, are a little harder for me to accept.

Obviously I wouldn't ever suggest that Moonraker was remotely believable in itself! But it's fun, fast paced, has a good pre title sequence, an ok villain, and ok girl, a great soundtrack (all films set in space should have John Barry soundtracks for me!) and some nice set pieces. Not the greatest Bond but far from the worst (one thing it isn't is dull!)

If you like Moonraker, I say more power to you. I certainly don't expect everyone to agree with what I like and you have a right to like what you like. My reviews aren't meant to taken as the last word on the matter, just my opinions.

Just want to backtrack a ways because I was watching Live and Let Die and something always bugs me...who slipped 007 the Queen of Cups card that identifies Rosie as a double agent?

I don't think it ever is stated who slipped him the card.

And there’s the line in the pre-credit teaser where Lazenby looks at the camera and says, “This never happened to the other guy.” I wouldn't call that breaking the fourth wall -- more like painting it.

I'd always thought it was Solitaire--and that, ever since she first saw the "Lovers" card in reference to the two of them, she'd been having second thoughts....

As for the film itself--I loved it...but I agree that something seemed "off" with the speedboat chase scene. I'd attributed it to a lack of music for the scene...but I suppose one could say the notorious J.W. Pepper had something to do with it....

(I agree--I found him irritating on first viewing...but I guess he kinda grew on me on re-watchings....)

Now...I disagree in Quarrel Jr. I actually liked him a bit better than his father--somehow, he doesn't strike me as a man who'd buy the "dragon" thing, or the other superstitions about Crab Key, as much as Quarrel Sr.

Solitaire is something of another Domino--sweet, vulnerable, and youthfull. I love Bond's reaction as Solitaire explains why her powers have left her (because Bond took her virginity)--a look of "Oh, great...I think I've just made a significant mistake...."

Her interactions with Bond overall are very enjoyable.

Also...you gotta love Tee Hee's more sinister cameraderie with Bond (especially their exchange about the crocs )--and of course, how the henchman with the skeleton body-paint keeps coming back...even up to a "punch line" at the very end....

Live and Let Die had lackluster music to say the least. the theme song was great, one of my favorites. but George Martin dropped the ball IMO. watching the movie you can feel the lack of music. and more often than not when there is music its a reprise of the Bond theme.

Interesting reviews. I'm one of those few that didn't find thunderball to be that good, though it was certainly better than diamonds which was imo one of the worse in the series. It was obvious that connery was just there to collect a paycheck based on his bland performance.

Just to say sorry if I appeared to be taking umbridge, that wasn't my intention :)

Well I thought this, she is the logical choice, but she seems surprised when the Lovers card comes up again when Kananga asks her to predict what's going to happen with Rosie and Bond...plus it doesn't seem likely that she has free reign of the island.

I guess it could have been meant for Rosie herself, another warning like the hat?

I love the soundtrack, in fact been listening to it a lot lately. There's a lot of ochestral versions of the McCartney theme that I love (during the boat chase for example.)
