Interesting. Where have I ever said that I didn't like the film itself? I've actually said on multiple occasions that I really enjoyed the movie. It was very entertaining and fun to watch. With the exception of just a few scenes. It's just not a movie I can watch over and over again like TUC for example (my favorite Trek movie) Unfortunately, it was a very "dumb" movie. The science was shoddy, the references to TOS seemed forced at best and didn't fit with the theme of the movie. In fact, any references to Star Trek in general seemed out of place in this movie. The dialogue was at times very cheesy and Star Wars-y. Most of the characters (with the exception of Karl Urban's McCoy) were not very likeable and made it difficult for me to really give a crap what happened to them. The whole design of the Abramsverse gave me the sense that they took Star Wars, Galaxy Quest, and every B-grade sci-fi flick from the 1980's and melded them together to create the aesthetic of the Abramsverse. As a generic sci-fi summer blockbuster designed to be an action packed thrillride that will make a ton of cash, it was a resounding success. And I enjoyed it based upon those points. However, as a "Star Trek" movie, it failed for me. I wasn't able to connect with any of these alternate reality characters (except McCoy) because they didn't act like their original universe counterparts. Not even OldSpock. NuKirk was a total a$$ monkey who needed a butt-whoppin' real bad (and got several as I recall

). NuSpock just needed some sense slapped into his way-too-emotional head. NuUhura should be demoted for not performing her duties professionally because she couldn't stay at her post for more than 5 minutes without playing kissy-face with her superior officer. NuCheckov should still be in elementary school. NuScotty needs to lay off the crack and act like the "miracle worker" he was in TOS. NuSulu needs to learn how to drive. And NuBones was just fine. I really couldn't find any real fault with Urban's portrayal of Dr. McCoy. He was excellent.
My problem isn't with the movie itself. It is with JJA's "vision" of Star Trek. And yes, it is absolutely without a doubt my personal opinion. JJ's NuTrek wasn't what I, personally wanted to see. It didn't look or feel like the Star Trek I've been a fan of for more than half my life. I should have gotten the hint when the TV ads told me this wansn't my father's Star Trek and to forget what I knew. But I still gave them the benefit of the doubt. Unfortunately, it wasn't deserved. JJA's NuTrek is a substandard imitation that pales in comparison to the original and will not stand the test of time as TOS has. And yes, that is my opinion. The gushers are of the opinion that the Abramsverse is the most wonderful thing that has ever happened to Star Trek. I don't share that opinion. It's too bad that the JJ lovers believe that those who don't share their opinions are somehow beneath them and less important than they are in the grand scheme. Everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. And on a discussion board, those opinions will be aired, whether the gushers like it or not.
