Smith is adequate in his premiere - just.

Gillan is much more impressive.

I agree that Smith is dressed like a dweeb (and I'm generally not fond of the Doctor being stuck in a corny costume again) but...

his look unexpectedly worked for me in that whimsical clip from the next episode where Amy described him as her childhood imaginary friend (first clip here). He does look like some kid's imaginary friend. The Tardis' new children's hour look even worked there. I'm still not sold on either change but the whimsical vibe in that clip made both decisions seem more effective.

I absolutely love his look, but only because of one exchange of lines at the end of the episode. "Yeah, shoot me, I kept the clothes." "Including the bow tie?" "Yeah, it's cool. Bow ties are cool." "Are you from another planet?" "Yeah." "Kay..."

Even assuming all he did was stay in modern England, why would the Doctor have the same fashion sensibilities as a contemporary human? He's a 900-year-old alien from another planet. The fact that he tries to dress like a human at all is amazing.

He still seems to be a 1 chance kind of guy, but more direct, with the "Basically, run" line...

I always just kind of assumed he was/is a "Terraphile" or the like. He likes humanity more than he likes the people and culture of his own species so he has kind of adopted our clothing, speech, etc. I wish I could count on one hand the number of people I know who so desperately want to be Japanese that they get clothes, bedding, kitchen gadgets, candy, etc. all from Japanese import stores. Not to mention learning the language and picking up cultural quirks.

There are plenty of Japanese folk on the other side of the ocean doing the exact opposite. Seems fairly reasonable that it could happen on an interplanetary level too.

I'm not saying it's unreasonable. I just think it's odd that people demand he dress like a contemporary human. He's a master of time and space and regularly travels to different worlds. Ignoring that, he travels to different times on this world. Why would his fashion sense be locked on to 2010's fashions? The fact that he's even a century's breadth is astonishing.

just as long as one day he doesn't pitch up wearing fucking lycra leggings, ankle warmers, a sweat band and a Global Hypercolour t-shirt...

or worse. shiny metal fabrics like something from a bad 60s SF movie.

I for one don't particularly care if it's plausible that the Doctor would have a modern fashion sense, because keeping him from looking like a dweeb in the eyes of the general audience is far more important.

I'm still not sold on the bowtie. Everything else about this costume, I can buy, but I just don't know if he pulls off the bowtie or not.

Maybe not everyone thinks he looks like a 'dweeb?'

The opinion of the majority of people is what counts in that regard, not the opinion of individuals.

And what exactly makes you think you're in the majority?

Nothing in particular, which is why I didn't say that Smith's costume is bad. I said I'm not sold on the bowtie, and that's it.

What I did say was that the question of whether or not it is plausible for the Doctor to have a modern British fashion sense is not as important as making sure that the majority of the audience members don't think he looks like a dweeb.

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

quick show of hands, who thinks he looks a dweeb?

Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U

Sorry if someone has mentioned this already, but what struck me as rather odd (and rather Machiavellian) about this Doctor was right at the end when Amy is asking if the only reason he wants her to come is because he's lonely. Right at the point where we see the crack on the monitor, and he shuts it off. "Promise", he says. The rather obvious subtext there is that he might be using her to find out just why that crack exists, about why "silence will fall", etc.

Are we talking a Seventh Doctor/Ace/"Fenric" thing going on here?

Enjoy! :D

That's not an NHS hospital. All NHS trust badges carry the Trust name and the NHS logo in regulation NHS blue.

Presumably therefore Leadworth Hospital is a private concern. Though I don't know of many private units still using nightingale wards, let alone having enough patients to warrant a 'coma ward', which seemed pretty odd in itself.

It doesn't specify Rory's grade or qualification: he could be a nurse, porter, orderly... more or less anything. But if this is 2008, he's been at least in employment for 18 years, namely since Amy was born. Which sheds a whole new light on him playing Doctors with her when she was a kid...
