Re: Doctor Who – The 11th Hour (5x01) - (Discuss – Grade | SPOILERS) U
Just watched the showing here in Canada. Excellent!
I've been a fan for 25 years and have seen all the Doctors, and I do feel this is the strongest introduction story for a Doctor ever. Is it the best episode ever? Far from it. But it was still fun, got the job done, and also served as a bit of a mission statement for this new era.
Some of my favorite moments:
The new opening credits. (STOP calling it a new theme! It's the same song from 1963, just a new arrangement.) It's striking and really moves, even moreso than the previous two versions Gold arranged.
Young Amelia sitting on her suitcase waiting for the Doctor actually came close to bringing tears to my eyes. I didn't expect that.
Fish fingers and custard. Nuff said.
"I'm worse than your aunt!"
Even with only a single episode under her belt, Karen Gillan as Amy has shot to almost the top of the companion charts, joining Romana, Sarah Jane, Rose and Donna. She had me with that "I'm not insane, really" look she gave when she talked about her psychiatrists.
The recap of the Doctors and Smith introducing himself was a pump the air moment. If it hadn't been too much of a spoiler (not to mention the appearance fees would have been nuts) this would have been a perfect trailer scene.
Love the typewriter! I also love the fact Moffat is bringing back the fact the TARDIS is supposed to be (nearly) infinitely large on the inside. I hope we see the swimming pool.
I found the scene where the Doctor was remembering something he'd seen was quite striking and un-Doctor-like. Probably inspired by a similar scene in the Sherlock Holmes movie. It was a great one-time gimmick but I hope it doesn't become a regular thing or else it'll lose its effectiveness.
But the best thing for me is the fact that, discounting the special case of Eccleston, this is the first time since Tom Baker that we've had a post-regeneration Doctor actually get a running start with (most) of his faculties. Even Tennant spent most of his first episode asleep. In a thread a year ago I said Moffat couldn't do the same thing with his new Doctor, not in this day and age, and he didn't. Well done him.
There were a couple of things that sat weirdly with me:
During the teleconference, where was Torchwood and UNIT?
Love the typewriter, but why the typewriter?
The idea of having a multi-bodied impersonation was really cool, but the dog didn't seem to want to play the game as you could see him bark while the guy was barking. Oops!
Was it just me, or did the snake-like form Prisoner Zero took look very much like the form the Master took in the TV movie? Connection?
Anyway, great stuff! The Smith era is off to a grand start and while I've never been one to hold onto past Doctors at the expense of others, I will say the transition to Smith is probably the smoothest I've ever had. Matt Smith is the Doctor now, and I think that says as much about his performance in the role as anything else - get nailed it first time out of the gate (well, first time on TV!).
