FWIW, I don't think that Ten's look was cool before Tennant made it so. And I don't think that Tennant's look was hot before Ten won us over and made us find him attractive. Maybe I'm just speaking for myself, though.

I would have to agree with you on those points, I own a few long coats like Ten's since around 2003 when I began my university studies and it wasn't untill a few years later that they seemed to be "cool" but I just wear what I feel comfy in and not what I think is trendy.

I need to really say this again, was Tennant's outfit initially cool, or did he make it cool? I happen to think the latter as I don't recall too many people running around in skinny pinstripe suits apart from Jarvis Cocker and he was so 1994!

The funniest thing is that I can still remember the complaints when 10's outfit was revealed as well.

And I'm not sure the Doctor should ever be the coolest man in the room, I'd rather he was the cleverest man in the room.

Again a lot of this will come down to how Smith sells it.

Yeah I have to admit, when I first saw Tennant's outfit I was pretty underwhelmed too. After Eccleston's dark and gritty look, Tennant's fancy suit and beige coat just looked really... bland and generic to me.

Keep in mind, that's how it looks from someone's camera off set, not how the actual camera, with the lighting, filters, etc. will record it.
