Full season?

Anyone know if season six will be a full season (20+ episodes) or will we get a 13 + season?

I hope it's 20+ as there is a lot to wrap up.

Most likely it will be a similar length to 4+5. As I recall, back in season 4 they were talking about having a finite number of episodes left rather than a finite number of seasons, and for some reason (the writers' strike?) they elected to go with 3 short seasons rather than two long ones.

I think the producers wanted to do two 24 episode seasons after the third, but the network wanted the show on as long as possible so they compromised to make three seasons of 16 episodes each. Then the writer's strike cut S4 down to 13, but they begged ABC to give them one more hour to extend the finale, so they only lost 2 hours. They moved the missing two episodes to the later seasons for 17 each. Then a few months ago they reported that they managed to milk one more out of the network for the final season, so that leaves us with an 18-episode mad dash to the end. This means the scheduling and planning of the show's structure has as many plot twists as the plot itself. :p

There are 16 episodes, but 18 "hours" of show. The season premiere and the series finale will be two hours.

I thought that too, then I heard that it was the producers who wanted three more seasons to complete their story.

They've all made stuff up as they go along. This is evidenced by former writers who have admitted that they didn't know what the hell was going on.

They say that they wanted two seasons, then three, then eighteen (exaggeration). Looks like they've reached a compromise though!

Yeah, and based on how they've told the last two seasons, I don't have a clue how they would have spaced out the Big Events within just two seasons total INCLUDING everything they have planned for season 6. The Disappearing Island® and The Incident® seem more important than just ordinary weekly cliffhangers. Weird to think that if they had been given two 24-ep seasons, the show would have been over for months now . I bet the producers wish they'd been told 6 seasons from the beginning, but before it was known the show would be such a hit I guess that was impossible.

My guess was that if Lost ended up being five seasons long, the season four cliffhanger would've had something to do with the Six's return to the island on Ajira 613, as this was just about exactly in the middle of our season five.

But yeah, the island disappearing would've been a pretty huge event to hit in the middle of season four. I think the structure we ended up with has worked out really well, what with season four being the story of the freighter, season five being the story of time travel and Dharma, and season six being whatever it's about. Something would've been lost (no pun intended) in a longer two season structure.

It's pretty obvious that they're not making everything up as they go along. And to refer to former writers as evidence is silly because 1) not all of them were most likely privy to all the answers especially in the first season or two and 2)some of them might be disgruntled as they no longer work for the show.

I thought the episode order was upped from 17 to 19? I could be wrong, but I think it's 18 or 19 episodes. I'm so psyched for the final season, but I am going to miss this show!

Temis just posted the original plot synopsis for the pilot earlier. This show has drastically changed since what it was originally conceived to be. They were going to kill Jack in the pilot, which they admit on the DVD.

So what? They knew the general direction and then when the show was given the back nine episodes of the first season they plotted out the mythology in intricate detail.

They didn't even know who the Oceanic Six was going to be until they began writing for Season 4.

Ben was originally a one shot character.

Eko was originally planned to be a major character all the way through the show.

They didn't know if they were going to kill Charlie off until the middle of the third season.

I understand that they might have picked out the ending or a general direction, but I don't believe for a minute that they have had all six seasons set in stone.

You're making a mistake here. I'm talking about them knowing all of the answers, not what exactly would happen. Planning out what exactly will happen is borderline impossible for a TV show due to actors leaving etc. However, it seems pretty clear that they knew all of the answers ahead of time because I went back and watched the whole series again recently and there were so many small things that clicked in. It was amazing.

And really, plans change as the story evolves. That's a good thing--I suspect had they stuck to some rigid plan they'd had in season one, the show wouldn't be nearly as good as it is. Any writer will tell you stories are living, breathing things--they change and take on a life of their own... and that's a great thing. They might have known the basics from getting from point A to point Z, but that doesn't mean things can't change along the way. Sometimes you find a better way of getting to the ending than you originally came up with as you go along.
