The College Football Thread

Hmmmm...so far Auburn's doing OK against Tennessee. Tennessee's unranked, but still, the more I see of this the more I'm liking. I'm actually starting to think that if enough ranked teams fall, Auburn might get in the top 25 if they can pull this off! :)

EDIT: WARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR-EAGLE! On to Arkansas...

Though I must say, that was really freaky, that Hail Mary the Vols pulled off at the end. If they'd had time to score one more that could've been truly damaging.

Man, seriously though...Cal is terrible! They were #6 two weeks ago?

Anyway, it looks like Oregon is the class of the Pac Ten right now, with Stanford lurking nearby.

FIGHT ON!!!!

I seriously doubt I will ever be much of a fan of the Univ. of Miami Hurricanes. However, a part of me is glad to see them win tonight and bounce back from last week's poor showing. This team is pretty good, but .... the real thing I like is Randy Shannon. The guy had a tough life growing up, without a father and brothers... all of whom dies in less than savory circumstances. Shannon didn't whine to anyone but worked his tail off and made something of himself. What's more, he's doing it with this team. That's the kind of guy I'd want my kids playing for.

You know what, I honestly don't care. Cal's effort the last two weeks doesn't even deserve to be talked about. Their season is done, just in time for the NHL Season to start. Actually now that I think about it, I think the whole college football season is dead to me now just like Baseball is.

BWA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAAAAAA!!!!!! :guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

Way to lose to the pathetic UTEP Miners, Houston!!! It's a quick ride from the penthouse to the outhouse isn't it, Cougars?

:guffaw::guffaw::guffaw:

I'll bet they're so sick they want to puke. They should be.

I'm no fan of Tennessee or Kiffen but when they get a QB in place that team is going to be scary good. They are playing a basic pro style on both sides of the ball. As they get used to it and grow into it - watch out.

Kiffen is doing what ND wanted Weiss to do and isn't taking 5 years to do it.

Do you have any idea what the hell happened, though? I mean USC isn't that good. Oregon might be, but still. Cal was scoring big points early on (146 in the first 3 games!). Then 6 points over the last two? Riley and Best looked awful last night. Riley especially. Is he injured or sick or something?

I suppose this just shows how useless early polls are in college football.

I think Cal was just overrated. I said in this same thread before the season started I don't understand why Cal is getting so much publicity when they really don't deserve it. It's like one year they go to one of those lower bowls (Was it the Emerald Bowl?) and then the next they are talked about as Pac-10 champions. I didn't understand it, I still don't understand it, and I think Tedford is a bit overrated. Granted they showed some spark in the first three games and maybe made me start to believe but then they went to Oregon last week and the rest is history.

As for USC, they are still the class of the conference. Games against Oregon and Stanford (Hey, give it up for the Cardinals, they are doing well) will be interesting to see. I just think teams now know how to exploit Cal's weakness. Stop the run (And best is not winning the Heisman, which was another one of those really head scratching conversations) and force Riley to throw the ball, which, as we've seen, he can't do. It's like he's been learning how to be a QB from JaMarcus Russel and that's not a good thing.

Boy, Washington State sucks this year. Oregon pulled most of its starters at halftime and the Ducks still won 52-6. Next up are road games at UCLA and Washington. I think both of those are winnable.

I'm no fan of Tennessee or Kiffen but when they get a QB in place that team is going to be scary good.

Their lack of a QB was definitely the major problem they had--that guy didn't start connecting with his receivers until the second half. The Hail Mary was a pretty frightening one, but that guy was definitely lacking in consistency.

Colorado State lost to freakin' Idaho. How the hell did that happen? I guess the BYU game sucked out their will to live. :(

Georgia loses two very close games to ranked teams, but drops from the top 25. Oklahoma does the same but stays in the top 25. There are still some 5-0 teams not ranked. It's all stupid.

Relax. In another two weeks Oklahoma will be 3-3 and you won't have to worry about them being ranked. Broyles is out for 6 weeks. It could get very scary for them after they lose the Texas game.

I left the Navy-Air Force game near the start of the 4th quarter - probably should have stayed. This was also one of the few college football games I have attended that did not result in hearing loss.

That BYU loss definitely hurt Oklahoma. They're now staring at a very real possibility of at least a 3 loss season. Tough to take for a program that was hoping to get back to the NC game this year.

Big matchup this week with Florida taking on LSU. Ideally both teams will lose, but I really don't see that happening (stupid rule that requires one winner!). Since I enjoying rooting against the #1 team, and don't really like Florida anyway, I'm forced to pull for LSU.

As for Grand Valley State, they blew out Tiffin this week in our "White Out" game. White outs look a lot weaker when there are only 14,000 people, and a lot of them choose to not participate.

Goodbye to any legitimate bowl hopes other than the Kraft Macaroni and Cheese Bowl in East Succotash, Iowa for the Oklahoma State Cowboys. Star wide receiver Dez Bryant was just kicked off the team, ruled ineligible by the NCAA for violating bylaw 10.1(d).

Bryant admitted that he worked out with former NFL wide receiver Deon Sanders in the offseason and didn't disclose it. That's against NCAA rules. Bryant's gone. Gundy isn't commenting, but Traber over here at the Sports Animal in OKC has sources on the inside since he's an OSU alum. Word is Gundy is beyond livid with Dez. It's a dumb ass, picky shit rule, but it is a rule. There goes Dez's season and the rest of his NCAA career. Along with a great many OSU hopes.

Kendall Hunter, O-State's star running back, isn't recovering from his ankle injury as well as they'd hoped. He may be out for several more weeks just as conference play starts. Gundy's hopes just went down the toilet in one fell swoop. It's unbelievable. People are shaking their heads at the Sooners, and now O-State's all stars are gone, too. It's f'ing bizarre.

Looks like the head of the board of trustees thinks Bobby Bowden has come to the end of his string.

"My hope is frankly that we'll go ahead, and if we have to, let the world know that this year will be the end of the Bowden era," chairman Jim Smith told the Tallahassee Democrat on Sunday. " ... I do appreciate what he's done for us, what he's done for the program, what he's done really for the state of Florida.
"I think the record will show that the Seminole Nation has been more than patient. We have been in a decline not for a year or two or three but I think we're coming up on seven or eight. I think enough is enough."

Part of Beaver Stadium's scoreboard blew away yesterday. They closed Porter and Curtin road and we were speculating why - that was the reason.
