The College Football Thread

Well, it's not like any of us Husker fans thought Louisiana-Lafayette would be a challenge, but...55-0? I actually feel kind of sorry for the other team in a situation like that! :p

Nuts! I went to bed instead of staying up for the Iowa - Penn St game resolution!

I turned the TV off after the end of the first quarter when Iowa was down by 10. I'm glad I did and they were able to turn it around. :D

JM'S Top Twenty-Five, Week Ending September 27th, 2009

1 – Florida (4-0)

How will the Justice League fare if Superman is out of action for a while?

2 – Alabama (4-0)

Could they perhaps be underrated? Virginia Tech would say yes.

3 – Texas (4-0)

Texas-El Paso counts as one of those directional wins: They were once Texas Western.

4 – Cincinnati (4-0)

Suddenly the date with USF looks huge.

5 – Houston (3-0)

Right now, arguably the best resume in the country.

6 – Auburn (4-0)

I can't get over these guys scoring points in bunches.

7 – Boise State (4-0)

That win over an Oregon team that bitch-slapped Cal looks terrific now.

8 – Louisiana State (4-0)

Struggled against the wrong Bulldogs.

9 – South Florida (4-0)

The win over FSU is this program's all-time signature victory; recruiting may well take a very different turn from this point forward.

10 – Iowa (4-0)

Their defense looked awesome.

11 – Virginia Tech (3-1)

Not quite out of the national title hunt.

12 – Oklahoma State (3-1)

The Houston loss doesn't seem so bad now that the Cougars have added the Red Raiders' scalp to their collection.

13 – Oregon (3-1)

I have my answer: It took one week for Cal to shit the bird.

14 – Oklahoma (2-1)

BYU's recovery helps the cause a bit.

15 – Michigan (4-0)

Their offense vs. Iowa's D looks like an intriguing matchup.

16 – Texas Christian (3-0)

To cross the country and win at Clemson ain't too shabby.

17 – Kansas (4-0)

Evidently their own basketball team gave 'em their best fight thus far this year.

18 – UCLA (3-0)

Are they a genuine contender?

19 – Georgia (3-1)

Does the SEC have a truly bad team?

20 – Southern California (3-1)

Well, at least they're ranked higher than UW again.

21 – Miami, Florida (2-1)

Wow. They got handled.

22 – Ohio State (3-1)

Like the proverbial bad penny, they're still around.

23 – South Carolina (3-1)

And I thought Rutgers' offense sucked. Well, it does, but that's beside the point.

24 – Wisconsin (4-0)

Meh.

25 – Georgia Tech (3-1)

The ACC's gonna be a wild ride.

Rutgers Watch: The Knights defeated Maryland 34-13, but it wasn't exactly an offensive display: RU's D scored a pair of touchdowns, and had outscored Natale and company until well into the fourth quarter. Clearly the game against UC was an aberration: This defense is ferocious, and Maryland's QB started to look genuinely scared after a while. Rutgers is now 3-1 on the year, but must still prove itself against a quality opponent.

JM1776,

You can go ahead and take Cal out of your top 25 now. What a pathetic effort this was. I don't know what to say other than another year, another game in which Cal forgets to show the hell up. At least USC lost a Pac-10 game, but man this is disappointing. I think what's worse is this game is making me look incredibly stupid for the things I said this week. I guess the only good thing about this weekend is tomorrow is the NFL but you never freaking know. :(

I feel bad for both you and mimic, dude: Cal and Penn State have dropped out of my top twenty-five—though the Lions might well reappear in short order, since Iowa didn't exactly pummel them.

You don't look stupid in the least. Cal is always like the little girl with the curl, at turns awesome and awful. They might well give USC what for. At least, we can both hope so. :techman:

Since misery loves company, I'll mention this: UC's win over my Scarlet Knights was probably uglier.

Well, having finally dried out and warmed up and such I guess I'll comment on the game.

I was mentally prepared for a loss, since the team hadn't looked good against inferior opponents; however I didn't anticipate them looking quite that anemic on offense. After the first quarter I was in a good mood - Iowa wasn't doing much on offense (and really they didn't have that much success all game - we gift-wrapped their one offensive TD) and it looked like our offense was rolling. But then penalties started stalling drives. And then the turnovers began. Ugh. They never stopped, either. The last two offensive drives, with the game on the line, resulted in two incomplete passes, a fumble and an interception. Clark threw RIGHT TO the defender on two occasions. Ugh. Most frustrating thing ever.

I'm curious to see the roughing the kicker penalty that extended one of Iowa's drives. I have my doubts that it was legit, but they don't show many replays in the stadium. It's not like that would have changed the outcome; I'm just curious.

Gameday was fun, and the game was mostly fun despite the constant rain and sucky outcome.

^The roughing the kicker penalty was not legit. The Penn State player was blocked into the kicker's area, and Iowa's kicker acted like his leg was rolled up on. Herbstreit commented on how good of an acting job it was.

^I feel the same way. There's an incentive for punters to take dives as it stands right now. But put a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty in play, and punters will stop flopping.

It's a penalty in hockey to take a dive, I don't see why it shouldn't be in football too.

Hockey is the only sport where that's the case. In Basketball, it's basically a given that people will flop to "take the charge" in order for the foul to get called.

Eh, it's a little different in basketball. If you flop, and a charge isn't called you've basically given the other team a free basket, since you're not on your feet to defend anymore. There's a degree of risk in taking a flop on a charge. The kicker has nothing to lose by taking a dive. A penalty would add some risk. Especially a loss-of-down penalty.

Just saw this story. USC Tailback Stafon Johnson had to have emergency throat surgery after the weightlifting bar fell on his throat while bench pressing.

Luckily he had a spotter who was able to remove it quickly, but still.

Hopefully he'll have a quick recovery with no lasting damage.

The greatness of Drew Litton and his thoughts on the college season so far:

I'm still sad about the Rocky Mountain News dying, but I'm very glad the Post picked up Drew Litton.

Yeesh, 4th hanson...that's a pretty ugly story! But that does go to prove why, as much as people might think such things are not necessary, it's always good to have a spotter for stuff like that.

Actually, the Post, in their infinite wisdom, didn't pick up Drew. He's on his own - drewlitton.com and drawing for 9news as well as some other gigs.

I think the wrong paper died, personally. I'm still pissed that the Rocky is no more.

An update on the USC player Johnson. After 7 hours of surgery, it is expected that he will fully recover even though he's not able to speak yet. The article says that his muscular neck probably saved his life.

Glad the kid's going to be OK.

That makes sense. His position as RB necessitates a good, strong neck. But thank heavens he had someone else there to help him.
