Major League Baseball 2009

Not being a fan of pro football, or indeed any football except the Huskers, I really have nothing to dwell on during the fall, so I busy myself by snapping up DVD collections of old baseball games. Right now I've got them all - O's (actually it's more of a Cal Ripken collection than an O's collection), Cardinals, Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees, Mets - except for the World Series themselves. No budget for that yet. :p

I wonder if there is still time for the Giants to come back. Given the Rockies are still winning, and the Dodgers are still winning, no matter how many weeks are left, the Giants are digging themselves a big hole. The next 6 games might just be the most important things of the MLB Season. Pity ESPN isn't coming to San Francisco on Sunday night because this is a guranteed Sunday Night Game.

What an 8th inning that was...Posada came through for our boys in the Bronx! :techman:

It was pretty funny watching Joe Maddon go through the entire Rays pitching lineup like that too. Desperation, anyone?

And Jeter gets three hits - ties Gehrig's record. Awesome. You really gotta give him credit...no matter whether you are a Yankees fan or not, Jeter really is a great player and a class act. :techman: :techman:

Jim Tracy really should be manager of the year. The guy took over a team in late May that was destined for one of the worst records in baseball and now they're still in the hunt for the NL west, and the leading the wild card.

Another loss by the Tigers last night to Kansas City. Verlander pitched well, only giving up 1 run. But you don't win many games when you only score 1 run either...

The Tigers are doing the opposite of what the Phillies are. The Phillies end a losing streak by playing a last place team. The Tigers end a winning streak by playing a last place team...

And the Rockies keep on winning. Back to within 2 games of the Dodgers, heading out on a 9 game road swing with 3 against the Giants.

Beautiful game by Lackey last night. I hope he can keep that up.

We should have a pretty good race in the AL West down the stretch here. We need Texas to stay behind us, but ahead of Boston....

:techman:

Has there ever been a year with less drama in the pennant races?

Even with the AL wild card, it seems Boston is perpetually 2.5 games up. Them and Texas seem to win and lose on the same days.

Edit: Just checked the standings...when did Colorado get within 2 of LA?!?

Ah yes, the annual Red Sox/ Angels ALDS bye round...

Well, as a Giants fan, I'm officially throwing in the towel, sticking a fork in the team and twisting it hard. How can the Giants go into a huge series and just do what they always do, don't hit, don't provide any offense, and just suck. Oh sure, the pitching is nice, and Velez is fast and Pablo is nice a chubby like, kinda like a Panda, and Sanchez was a decent trade, but Winn, Rowand, Renteria, these players who are supposed to lead are not doing crap. While all this is going on, the Rockies refuse the lose (Kinda like what happened 2 years ago, which if memory serves, sent them to the world series, watch out St Louis and Philly) and the Giants are just blowing whatever hope they have left out of the water.

It was a decent season, but frankly I'm tired of the loser mentality of the Bay Area. Here is the biggest quote in this area regarding the San Francisco Giants, "No one expected the team to be this good so where they are now makes it a great season." Ah, errr, wrong. A great season is when you make the playoffs. A great season is when you win your devision and then the big kicker is a great season is winning the World freaking series. The Giants aren't doing any of the above, so how is this a great season again? The Bay Area lost it's will to win ever since the Niners in the late 90s. Sure 2002 was nice, but man what a disappointment that was and the fan response should have forced the Giants to Tampa Bay. Instead it's "oh, we lost, time to sob for 2 years and then forget about the whole thing." Yeah, um, good for you I guess.

So, I see he Rays@Sox game listed as "postponed" and not "suspended." Is this correct and the first game of the double-header will be a do-over? That would be nice, as Lester had the bases loaded with one out as the tarp went on the field.

Hopefully the Sox can hang in there and seal the deal on the wild card.
