In retrospect, a movie that combined the best of both Nemesis and nuTrek would have absolutely rocked.

Eric Bana as the villain. Huge fleet including the Enterprise departing Earth. Destruction of Vulcan. Spock. Spock being responsible for Nero's wife's death. TNG era and cast. Enterprise ramming the villain ship. Huge budget. Visual effects by ILM. Faster pace. Score by Goldsmith. Directed neither by Baird nor by Abrams, but by someone who likes great, epic visuals without lens flares and without camera shaking.

I think I have a wider understanding of "reboot" now in any case :)

I'm glad they didn't go with a TNG movie. I'll be up front here- it's one of my least favorite star trek series, period. When I heard rumors there was going to be a new trek movie, I assumed it would be TNG-based and I also had absolutely no interest in ever seeing it. However when it became clear what it was going to be, I got excited, and I imagine there were a lot of people out there who felt similarly.

A TNG film would have been just another TNG film with increasingly geriactric characters. But make 'em all young and attractive, add awesome special effects and loud explosions as well as a conveluted storyline, and there you have it- welcome to the 21st century.

Giving it absolutely no chance before having seen a second of material. Now that's nice.

    Nicely prejudiced statement.

LOL, sorry, but in my opinion, that's not a compliment, it just sums up how hollow and soulless everything has become.

Finally!!! Some people who actually agree with me. I thought that I was pretty much alone in this.

I find it quite difficult to consider the latest film an actual Star Trek movie. I found it hollow, empty, shallow, and a solid waste of my $11.

TNG deserved one last film. I mean really, Patrick Stewart VS Chris Pine? Give me a break!

Retcon is short for retroactive continuity. It refers to placing an event in a characters past that did not exist previously. Even if it contradicts the established continuity. A classic example would be Superboy. Before Superboy's introduction, Superman was established as starting his career as an adult. In Trek, the introduction of Sybok would be a retcon, since Sarek was was never said to have a wife or child other than Amanda and Spock.

Breaking away from the tradition of the previous four movies, I would have liked to have seen a good movie.

I'd have liked to see a Q film but it would have to have been a total mind-fuck--and dangerous.

I envision a hooded figure walking across a desert strewn with skulls. We pull back to see a man hanging from a cross between two other crucified men. The hooded figure pulls back his hood to reveal John DeLancie, who says "The Continuum is very displeased with you, Q."

Meh, I was fine with Nemesis as an ending to the TNG story. It wasn't a great movie, but most of the characters had reached natural end points by the movie's end.

Except for poor Geordi and Worf, anyway.

I would love to see a new and final TNG film epic, that ends the TNG era in a grand way. But it would absolutely have to be done right, which by MY standards, means the following...

    - NO "baddie" Klingons... AT ALL

    - NO Romulans... the whole postwar-era Romulan thing is being beaten to death in the fanfilm and fanfic circles, so it wouldn't be original in any way. Plus, if we can't be given the treat of finally seeing a D'Deridex-Class Warbird on the big screen, I don't want any Romulans at all.

    - NO token mwuahaha, mustache-twirling bad guys with no substance or dimension to their characters. In other words, nobody who is willing to wipe out an ENTIRE planet, and fleet, just because he has a personal score to settle, against ONE man. If you have a bad guy, give him depth and dimension... give his a REAL motive for his actions... one we can relate to, and believe, to justify his (or her) actions. STOP trying to copy the template of Khan. It will NOT work.

    - NO gargantuan, super-duper, uber-fanwank, ship-of-doom, monstrosity of an enemy warship. Have an enemy that is believable.

    - Tell an ORIGINAL, and fresh story, that both entertains, makes us think, and hits at the core of what Trek is about. It CAN be done...

-What about a film dealing with the events of the conflict with the Cardassians? Maybe showing how the UFP got involved, by maybe trying to render humanitarian aid to the Bajorans, and ending up getting embroiled in a war, until a truce was declared, and the DMZ was established? Or maybe a film dealing with the aftermath of that... the advent of the Maquis... a big-screen Maquis story could be great... people who hate the Cardassians, yet even though the UFP got them to leave, they feel that the UFP will become just another new invading force. Hmmm... how could that be translatable to our own world, today? ;)

    - What about a big-screen story that deals with the terrorism that we saw on Rutia III? What got the Ansata to begin fighting? What was the conflict about? Why not have the UFP in some way either broker a peace on the world, or find themselves embroiled in the conflict?

    - What about doing a film with the Tholians? The Gorn? The Breen? The Star Trek universe is overflowing with such a diversity of alien cultures, it's such a shame that the writers have confined themselves to Klingons, Romulans, or Borg... such a shame. What about a film where a member of the Tholian Assembly goes rogue, citing unhappiness that the Tholian government has embraced so many cultures outside of the Assembly, and fearing a loss or threat to Tholian culture?

There are SO MANY original and fresh things they could do... I could list ideas all day.

The Return of the Sisko would have been a great title for the 11th Star Trek movie. On the poster: Patrick Stewart and Avery Brooks, and the Enterprise-E zooming out of a dramatically exploding wormhole.

Good point. Especially when you think that Khan never wanted to use the Genesis Torpedo to destroy a planet. It was only used in the last minute, and only to destroy the Enterprise. Essentially, all he thought about in that moment was killing Kirk.

Unless you can tell me what kind of actual substance such a story would have, other than pure fanwank, I'm gonna say no, lol.

Yes, because a movie with familiar actors will automatically be less successful than a movie with new actors. Seriously, what the problem with you guys? What the hell is up with that mind block "TNG: fail"?!

Director, cast, story, promotional campaign, trailers, quality of the final product, all of those make the success. For the new movie the combination worked, for Nemesis it didn't, but why should automatically NOTHING work just because it's TNG? That's irrational! That's illogical! That's stoopid, seriously!

I have to agree with Skywalker on that one.

One of the major ways for a film to be a success is to draw in as many viewers as you possibly can. While Star Trek fans would probably enjoy a crossover of the series, the truth is the average movie goer is going to say "So what?"

The imagery of the Enterprise coming from the wormhole is interesting though, I'll give you that, but you'd need more than that.

I'd go with a name similar to Star Trek: Rebirth or Star Trek: Phoenix or Star Trek: From the Ashes - something that'd draw up interest. I would, as suggested, use another race than the ones used previously (I would go with the Cardassians) and make it something truly epic as much as I could.

    True it'd probably fail...

I've never been a big TNG fan, but it seems to me Nemesis wasnt a bad sendoff...I mean the movie could have been a lot better, but for the most part everybody got their future destiny explained. Plust, they had their send off in "All Good Things", which pretty much summed up where everybody ended up.

Yeah, of course, that's the point of promoting your movie. There would be the trailers, different posters, short clips, the synopsis, the rest of the cast, the interviews, and positive word of mouth if the movie eventually meets the audience's needs.

And I say a TNG movie, a DS9 movie and a TNG/DS9 crossover movie would have been able to do that, if done right.

Why would anybody be possibly interested in some nerdy characters from a cheesy TV show from the 60s? That was the public non-Trek opinion, until Abrams started this agressive promotional campaign, until the trailers rocked the cinemas and Sylar played Spock. There is no reason to believe that this wouldn't have worked for another TNG movie. Picard is the guy from X-Men, for God's sake. Get Bryan Singer to direct and talk Hugh Jackman into playing the younger hero Starfleet officer, OR WHATEVER, don't nail me down to specifics, it's about the general idea that TNG definately would have worked if FINALLY. DONE. RIGHT.

This even wasn't meant to be that serious, but you guys are already going wild. It's funny. Judging a brain fart for a not even planned movie by a short description of a poster, LOL.
