MadMan's Wallpaper Thread (Wide Image Warning)

Belive me, Jir, he's very familiar with these ships, as I'm the guy who got them to model them .. and pound him a little on their look. The dishes on the more organic lines of the NuEnterprise just don't look right, so he ditched them.

And, it's funny that you show those images of the ships as 'accurate'.. since the Columbia doesn't have spires like that anywhere.

That image I posted was the first one I could find on a Google image seacrh, and posted it only to point out the deflector dishes (not sure what you mean by 'spires'?) I also wasn't aware of you assisting him and nixing the idea of the dishes as you indicated.

I really like your scout image, especially the differences between it and the destroyer. I might just try to model that on my SFB minis.

In any case, no offense was intended.

It's no problem.... It's been a while since we had a thread talking about it. :)

Here's a planet I have been working on... the land is 100% original, done by me this morning. It's a combination of Lunar Cell, part of mars, and a bunch of hand-brushing.

It turned out WAY better than I hoped. :)

^^
Just keeps getting better and better :techman:
Thanks. :)

Here are some more...

This one is called Vulcan 2... The idea is that the Enterprise is delivering supplies to the new colony Spock set up for all the survivors to settle on. The planet is built of several different planet textures blended together and tweaked...

And, I realized I didn't build one with the Reliant by itself, so I did this one...

I hope you guys like them. I think I'm finally on the right track. :)

I think I might make one of Enterprise and Reliant tonight... Wallpaper sized, and without many shadows. :)

Something is bothering me about the planetary shadows. Can shadows actually have those curves on a sphere, or are you just freehanding it? Maybe that's what looks odd to me.

Why wouldn't the shadows have curves? It is hitting a curved surface, after all...

First, it's great to see your skill set just keep getting better and better. Second, I commend you on patiently listening to peeps' constructive criticisms and using it as an opportunity to learn and grow (as opposed to ego-strutting like some artists do.)

As for the shadows, the only thing I see that's a bit odd is that the shadow of the "moon" in the Reliant photo doesn't form a complete crescent. A single light source like a star should divide a sphere into two halves and regardless of viewing angle, if the shadow is visible, the shadow will reach from "pole-to-pole." (Note: by pole-to-pole, I mean from one edge to the opposite edge, 180 degrees around the circle.)

Here's a nice image of what I mean.

Ok, I see what you mean. It's going to bother me, now. :)

I got that right in the other image... I wonder why I messed it up on that one. :)

Yeah, there's no reason for me to go around like I know everything, because I know I don't, and in the larger scheme of things, does it really matter how well I can make a 3d computer generated background for my computer? No sense in getting too serious about that....

If you are using Photoshop, you might try some form of ellipse mask to set the shape for the shadow terminal, since an ellipse is usually the shape you're after anyway.

Hey, everybody... I have a new image I was playing with... and it's not a ship from the new movie!

I was making those comparison images the other day, and I wondered what my old Enterprise model would look like, in my new lighting setup, and with some of the new techniques I have learned... I think it holds up pretty well. :)

What do you guys think?

Great stuff as usual, but shouldn't the planet have a shadow matching the two moons seeing as all three are subject to the same light source?

Actually, Sojourner, it might in this pic. The picture crops out JUST before the shadowline would form.
