MadMan's Wallpaper Thread (Wide Image Warning)

I would change the viewing angle of the station. Right now it looks like a VERY large surface installation. Still a great image though!
Hmm... I didn't think about that. :) I was trying to do the scaling based on what the Shuttle image looked like... It just occured to me that the planet should be farther away...

Also, keep in mind the shuttle/ISS orbit at a pretty low level, 200-300 miles.
How far do you think the Starbase should be orbiting, based on what the visuals from the movie? That's something I've never really thought about...

I LOVE the Saturn image, but the last version you did of it looks too dark... too much of the lower saucer's detail is wiped out... keep it a bit lighter... because even at that angle, there WOULD be light on it, as some of Saturn's rings are comprised of ice chunks, or icy rock... which light from the Sun and Saturn would reflect off of.
I tried to keep that in mind... on both of my monitors, the shadowed areas are dark, but you can still make out details. I'll check it on my work monitor tomorrow...Maybe I did go too far.

Loving the images. Glad someone is showing off the newly designed Enterprise. Can't wait to see what's next in store for us.

It looks like the movies have Earth's "Spacedock" orbiting at around 3000 miles. Remember, the Earth is a big thing. If you're going to see any real curvature, you're going to need to be a good distance away.

Here's the view from 200 miles up, ISS's orbit:

From here you can just make out the southern tips of Italy. Compare that to Space Dock from TSFS:

where you can see a full quarter of the horizon.

That's more like it.

I must say, seeing your work evolve over the past 6 months has made me think that even I could model some stuff.

OK, here's what I was thinking... I think as far as lighting and arranging, this is OK. My crappy station windows don't hold up at this distance, though. I'm going to tweak that some... I also made a new Starfield, by doing a new tutorial. :)

Hey, Ricky, a question...

I know you haven't been working "in-scale" so you can't give "real numbers" for the sizes of objects and elements... but can you tell me the proportional, relative height of the "bumps" above and below the saucer disk, and the disk thickness, in whatever units you are using, along with the maximum outside diameter? Since I think you've got the proportions as close to correct as we're likely to see 'til "official" drawings or models are released, you're a good source for this.

I THINK that the overall height of the saucer is divided into almost perfect thirds... that is, one third above the saucer upper edge, one third below, and one third making up the saucer edge thickness.

But you can answer that much more accurately than I can at the moment. So... share, share!

Okay, seeing that... can you render out to cel-shading?
Well, I can, if I go and make new textures with a special shader on every object. :) I might try and make a version of this model that I can do that specific thing with...

If the cel-shading works...

Anyway, as for my part of this beast, I have no idea how we're going to spec this thing. One of the modelers gave a 2000' size for the Enterprise, which is pretty high on absurd. None of the sets match the exteriors, and every CGI shot I can find has a scale issue (some worse than others)...

Maybe I'll just start with the bridge dome...

I thought you gave up on this stuff. :)

I knew you couldn't stay away for long......

:) Thanks.

There's nothing to it. I just had to pick the hardest 3D app with the worst interface to start out on. Now I'm so screwed up, none of the other 3d packages I've looked at make any sense at all. :)

I knew you couldn't stay away for long......

Depends on WHAT I do at this point, and I haven't fully decided... but I did have an amusing experience this weekend...

1) A family friend that was very important to me growing up actually demanded that I do Trek stuff for her. (Hard to argue with a mom figure...)

2) Other people offered money.

Hmm... money always changes things. Mom figures do also. :)

Mom figure mattered a whole lot more to me, to be sure. I'm a sap... I admit it. I didn't even know she was following my material like that.

(Why is it, by the way, that no one said a thing in MONTHS to me about the Jaynz material.. not a word.. not a peep... then I get hundres of people pissed at me suddenly for retiring it?!)
