I've said this before, but I believe that the design of the Starbase near earth, is a Really Huge Nod to Franz Joseph's 1975 STM.
The tribble is in a cage over scotty's shoulder when they first meet him,
I kind of like to think kirk hitting his head going onto the shuttle is a nod to star trek V where scotty hit his head, but I know that's reading too much into it i'm sure.

A not-so-subtle nod (and dig, perchaps?) to the unlamented prequel show?
The constant references to "the original universe" and its shows/movies really proved to me that this movie was a labor of love and not simply a mullah-machine.
I'll bet that's the last time Kirk lets a Redshirt carry the explosive's...
