nods to previous treks *spoilers*

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

It makes me all kinds of happy that "Enterprise" is the only the show to have happened in both continuities.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

The last thing I wanted was my show to be the butt of Simon Pegg's stand-up routine. I'm trying not to think of the animal cruelty issue here.

I think you should lighten up a little. :) I thought it was funny (and the audience at my showing agreed). Well, it was in line with many of the other crude jokes in the movie.
At least ENT got a nod, while the rest of modern Trek did not (or I missed it).

Yeah, me too. At long last, all the bad-mouthing of the show as not being Trek is avenged and we get a delayed satisfaction. :D

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

I am waiting for the beagle to rematerialized in the next film.
that already happens in the final scene of the novellization of the movie.

See, Enterprise fans got the nod they deserved, even if it's not exactly what they were expecting.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Overhearing a teacher mentioning the Romulan War in an Academy Class. "Who was the Captain of the NX-01?" A question to which Chekov answers with a Russian name but is then corrected...
What, you mean Ivanatan Yenrikovich Archerov? What it is wrong about him?

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

All the unseen history Archer must surely have been involved in, and all they can reference is his name and the fact he owned a beagle.

That's more than I expected for there to be in the film. Especially since, for a lot of people, ENT isn't even canon.

I'd be happy with THAT!

Since our Spock came back from the future and there was a comic prequel made about this featuring the TNG crew, I'd say the second live action ST series features quite moreso than a limp dick former captain who was more famous for gazelle speeches and owning a beagle!

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

It's a cute little nod, but given that Enterprise takes place about a century before this movie (which the writers may or may not have been aware of), I think we have to logically (:vulcan:) assume that Scotty's referring to some other Archer (possibly a descendant) who happened to have a beagle.

Yeah, yeah, I hate to be the "continuity guy", but someone had to say it.

I thought about that too for a sec as well - ENT takes place around 2151, and the film is set in 2258, so that would make him around 140...

But I just liked the reference anyway, and by the fact that life expectancies tend to increase over the years due to medical advancements I think that it's plausible he could have lived until then. Whatever - it's just a throwaway line to those who know who Archer is.

Re: Anyone else pick up the nod to 'Enterprise' (the show)?

Who wants to think that TNG and DS9 were discarded, but Enterprise wasn't?

Exactly what happened though. You can also add TOS and Voyager to the mix. Enterprise and JJ-Trek are all that remain.

Actually, that already happens in the final scene of the novellization of the movie.

OH REALLY? Haven't found the novelization for sale yet here :( Will definitely read it now.

This is true- in fact, not to be a spoiler, but it's literally the last line in the novelization (I know this because I flipped to the back in the bookstore yesterday).

Has anyone properly read the novelization and does it contain any fun tidbits?

Yes, indeed. It doesn't even have to be the same guy. On the other hand, he might have spent some years in a cryogenic tank or in a transporter buffer. There are ways to explain this if one so chooses. Actually, I think it's fun to think of ways how this could have been possible.

I was hoping to see if anyone else noticed nods to the previous movies/series.
The two i noticed big time was Kirk eating the apple during the kobyashi maru test, and the enterprise rising out of the clouds both ala The Wrath of Khan. Anyone notice anything else?

Scotty got sent to Delta Vega because of what he did to "Admiral Archer's prized beagle."

Did he kill Porthos? ;)

Couldn't believe we actually got an Enterprise reference. I'm only sorry Old Spock didn't get to say hi to Pike.

I don't think it was possible to be Porthos. Maybe another dog of Admiral Archer's.

Yeah, I don't think it's possible for Porthos to live to be 100 but still...Scotty killed Archer's beagle. Maybe he pissed on one of Scotty's engines. ;)

There was a mention of some kind of Cardassian drink, at the Starfleet bar.

Other visual nods include Pike's admiral uniform, very similar to Kirk's in TMP, and the first real look at the Enterprise herself as the music swelled was very reminiscent of our first look at the old girl in TMP.

Also, nuSpock meeting Old Spock reminded me a great deal of the Spock/Sarek conversation near the end of TVH.

I'm sure there were a few other small ones (the bit with the apple went completely over my head until it was mentioned). Those are the one I can think of after two viewings.

Yeah, caught the Cardassian reference. Also, Pike in a wheelchair could be construded as a nod to TOS.
