Why switch to Kirk from Pike?

Well, remember Kelley also had pronunciation problems with the name of the monster in "A Private Little War", so they had to change it from "Gumato" to "Mugato".

How was that supposed to be read? I'm looking at it and I'd probably say "guh may toe". Unless it's "Gum aah toe".

He identified himself to the illusory colonists on Talos as "Captain Christopher Pike, United Space Ship Enterprise." When trying to speak to the Talosians, he said, "My name is Christopher Pike, commander of the space vehicle Enterprise, from the stellar group at the other end of this galaxy" (talk about your hyperbole). He's referred to as "Captain Pike" during the briefing-room scene and as "Mr. Pike" in the Orion slave girl illusion.

Yep. The bound version of Gene Roddenberry's script of "The Cage", sold recently via Roddenberry.com as part of their complete set of TOS scripts, called the captain "Robert Winter", but I seem to recall reading that the actual shooting scripts had the pencilled correction, "Pike", on them. And, of course, "April" and "Spring" were tossed around at various times, among others.

Guhmahtoe, tomatoe, let's call the whole thing off. (picture a blood-red mugato being stepped on by a giant Uma Thurman, who then calls it ketchup.)

People,

You do realize that if the character name stayed the same, Captain Pike, and Shatner was the second person to play Pike, we would have threads today debating the two actors' merits, kind of like the "two Darrens" debate on Bewitched! :techman:

Red Ranger

I thought they both had their good points, and didn't mind at all when they switched back and forth on a daily basis in syndication. They were both "Darren" to me.
