David Goyer Teases the Next Batman Film!

Robin can be done well and in a serious manner... however, it requires such an effort to make it non-stupid that what's the point? I read Dark Victory the other day. Good graphic novel. But at the end of the day it was still a little runt putting on a stupid looking Robin suit and fighting super-villains. I can't get over the conceit of Batman/Bruce allowing a little kid to suit up and fight alongside him. Its just stupid.

I could see him in an Oracle-type role, that might work. Or something where he helps Batman ONCE in a non-lethal situation, then you have that Dark Victory line where he's like "I want to help" and bruce goes "One day, you will, I promise" and just leave it at that. But it just seems a little gratuitous, why even bother, when Bale and Nolan both hate the idea of Robin. Look what happened when Raimi wasn't a fan of Venom and was asked to put him in Spider-Man 3 - rushed, stupid, doesn't capture the essence of the character.

I believe in Christopher Nolan. If he hates Robin, then keep him out and hope that the director of Batman 4 likes Robin.

Yeah Ra's wasn't well known among non fans...hell there are probably a few characters in the entire franchise that are truly wide known characters. I would include Catwoman only if she is used as Selina Kyle first, love the version from Long Halloween and Dark Victory. In fact that resolves a lack of love story right there, you also have your rouges in Penguin and Catwoman (yes a rehash of Batman Returns but much cooler and Nolanesque) they both could be working for the League of Shadows and not really know it. Or you could just have Catwoman working as a petty theif who has her own agenda and is stealing from various mob bosses, Batman investigates this.

Catwoman should just be... a cat burgler (who is really good at what she does). No stupid 9 lives crap.

Ra's wasn't well known, but Batman Begins was about Batman, not the villain. Once you establish Batman in your franchise, then the draw is most likely going to be the villain.

...glad I'm getting people on the Talia band wagon!!

Unfortunately Talia is not a box office draw. The general moviegoer has no idea who she is. With Catwoman though you've got instant name recognition and a greater potential for $$$.

That is true. I've read around the net there are reports that Angelina Jolie is interested in it.

Sorry, but I'm having visions right now of her descending from the ceiling with her whip, saying, "Are you the Batman?" (in that Beowulf mode).

How do you figure that? Did the general audience go see X-Men because Stryker was in it? Did they go see Spidey 2 because they were dying to see Doc Ock? (I'd never heard of Doc Ock) Did they go see Star Trek IV because there were whales in it? Franchises work because people want to see the next X-Men, Spider-Man, Star Trek, or Batman movie. Everyone will go see the next Batman movie even if the villain is Soft 'n' Fuzzy Puppies because they'll remember that they enjoyed TDK and so they'll probably enjoy this one too.

I was inspried by your avatar...I'm surprised you didn't suggest it yourself lol. I do think she would work though nicely.
Well, you were suggesting it should be someone with an ethnic background, so I didn't even think of Kate.

That's another good idea. Though like Emmanuelle Chriqui, I think she's a bit short as well. But then, that has never stopped Tom Cruise, haha.

You know, average height is not short. Cruise would fit right in with most of the cast of Battlestar Galactica you know. :p

I think after the Catwoman film people might not react so well.

The Catwoman film was like the Schumacher Batmen; people love the character, just not a trashed up version of her.

I likes me some Beckinsale Catwoman. Jolie is also good. Evangeline Lilly works for me as well. Summer Glau?

Agreed, especially after the way he dealt with the copycats in TDK. He doesn't even want adults helping him to fight the criminals of Gotham, let alone a teenaged kid. I don't see how there is any way that Bale/Nolan's Batman would allow a kid to put himself in the line of fire like that, not without compromising the integrity of the character they have spent two films creating.

I'm sorry, I find that argument to be totally invalid.

Outside of Batman fans, nobody knows who Harvey Dent is, either. CERTAINLY nobody outside of the most hardcore Batman fans knows who Lucius Fox is. And not even Batman fans knew who Rachael Dawes was.

Your comment implies that the general public is nothing but a bunch of mind-numbed robots who only see things based upon prior familiarity. This, of course, is nonsense.

The audience only needs to know this - there's a movie that's worth seeing (based upon trailers, based upon reviews, based upon word-of-mouth, whatever). They'll go to see something that looks worthwhile.

Once they're IN THE THEATER, however, it becomes the portrayal of the characters which makes them like or dislike the film (and to give good word-of-mouth, or bad word-of-mouth - or likewise for reviews).

Does anyone who's not a "hardcore Batman fan" know who Talia is? Probably not. Does that mean ANYTHING about whether or not the character would be compelling for audiences to watch? Absolutely not. A well written character in a well-plotted situation in a well-produced film... prior familiarity is a TOTAL NON ISSUE.

They'll know who she is after the film's over, won't they?

How do you define "hardcore Batman fan?" I know who Talia is from watching Batman: The Animated Series, but I've never read the comics. I'm only into that series, Batman Beyond, and the movies and that's it. I wouldn't call myself a hardcore Batman fan.

That being said, I agree with you about there being no need for the general audience to know who Talia (or The Riddler or The Mad Hatter or whoever else) in order to draw them to the next movie.
