There IS a way to do a story involving Dick Grayson... actually, multiple ways... but like everything else, the prior film series just took the worst possible approach to EVERYTHING that they did.
There's a fan-film trailer that was put out a few years ago which I'm sorta fond of... and which really treats this fairly well.

Robin could work, especially if the theme is redemption. Redemption has lately become the raison d'etre for the character. I could see a possibility that Bruce allows Dick to track down his parents' killer and allow him to make the choice to kill or not to kill them. And then allow Robin to "retire".
The reason the story didn't work in the previous series is, as some have mentioned, Joel Schumacher. I mean, Jeez, this is the guy that recast every Bat-villain as some form of the Joker no matter what the character's name was.

I'm not going to bother touching on the subject of Dick Grayson since most of you already know my thoughts on using him in the Nolanverse. Redemption is a pretty good bet and I wonder if we'll go full circle and see the return of Ra's al Ghul in the third movie? The novelization for Batman Begins (I know that its probably not considered canon) indicates that Ra's is immortal and lived a very long time and uses the Lazasrus Pit. Its possible that someone was able to claim his body from the train wreck and pulled him to a Lazarus Pit. In the novel Ra's says that Talia is in Switerland, I would absoulutely LOVE if Nolan uses Talia in the third movie! They could revist the idea of theatrics and deception and have Taila as the new leader of the League of Shadows but acting like her father and then a big reveal in the movie's climax. Penguin could be used as a mob boss as has been suggested...I love the Bob Hoskins suggestion.

I would also fit, reasonably well, into the Batman mythos.
Remember, first of all, that Dick Grayson is 12 when his parents are killed... Bruce sees himself as a kid in Grayson, which is why he does something so stupid and inadvisable as taking the kid on as a "partner."
So, suppose that this kid's parents are killed, and the kid starts down a totally self-destructive path. Bruce Wayne decides (after a very hard decision-making process) that it's better to direct the kid's rage into a constructive direction than to just let it fester.
Once the killers are brought to justice, "Robin" would retire... at least that'd be Bruce's goal. Of course, like all headstrong young teenagers, Dick would have a different perspective. That could lead into a "titans" scenario (where Dick had basically already split from Batman already) or it could lead directly into the kid eventually becoming Nightwing (years later, once he's an adult) without any further "Robin" adventuring.
Okay... the key question for me is "who would play Talia?"
I really, really want the Arabic aspect to get played up... and I'm also particularly partial to arabic-looking women... when not wrapped up in nasty burka-like clothing, mind you!
Talia has to be stunningly beautiful... moreso than any one in any of the prior Batman film incarnations. Tall, slim, dark hair, dark eyes... I can't think of a single contemporary actress who's actually good looking enough to play Talia. So... help me out here.... who would you folks put into the role if you were casting it?
I was just going to see Monica Barccarin would be an awesome choice...same with Kate Beckinsale, she's pretty exotic looking and with a little accent training could pull the role off. I want to see Batman face off against Ubu in a no holds barred street fight...that would be pretty cool. I have convinced myself that Ken Wattatabe played Ubu in Batman Begins, and the second Ubu was in Wayne Manor just before Henri Ducard revealed himself as Ra's.
I was inspried by your avatar...I'm surprised you didn't suggest it yourself lol. I do think she would work though nicely. I'm not sure though how you would be able to incorperate any sort of romance between Taila and Bruce though using my proposal. Taila would literally be in the Shadows for most of the movie and then when the revelation occured Bruce would be forced to fight the daughter of his mentor. Talia would have some speech about how she admired the young Detective (this way we would have an al'Ghul finally calling Bruce Detective) most of the movie would be Bruce utilizing his dormant detective skills to filter out the new leader from afar, how her father had hopes that one day he would take his rightfull place at his side as the worthy heir he has long sought and marry his daughter. Talia has come to Gotham to claim her bethrotal, and then they fight basically at the end.
I was about to suggest Emmanuelle Chriqui as well.
Another name that was thrown around when Batman Begins came out was Eva Longoria.
Entourage!!! Yeah Emmanuelle Chriqui would be great...Eva Longoria would be fine but she's a little on the short side, Talia has always been depicted as being tall which might cancel out Emmanuelle Chriguri. Eva Mendes could work as well...glad I'm getting people on the Talia band wagon!!
How about Emmanuelle Vaugier. She's taller and could probably come off as a little tougher than Chriqui.
Considering that the Nolan films are heavily influenced by the Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale's The Long halloween. If they used bits of the follow-up, Dark Victory, then Robin could be nicely fit in and thematically be placed in the context of Bale's Batman.
