RIP Sir Patrick Stewart

From time to time, I check X.. today the first post I saw was from Patrick's account, less than 1 min after it was posted... "In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to...."
"Oh No....no... please...no..".
I do not get emotional over celebrities deaths...not even the ones I appreciate. But this hit hard, as hard as Bowie's. I called my best friend, with whom I watched most of TNG from the second hand VHS we bought from ebay, we were both so sad. But, as with Bowie, I feel privileged to have lived in Sir Pat's days.
Goodbye mon Capitaine...

My friend who got me in to Star Trek texted me as I was leaving work. This one hits hard. And so soon after we lost Walter. Just a devastating week for Star Trek fans.
My sister texted me while I was at work (I hadn't heard the news). She said "Rip Patrick Stewart". In my heart, I knew what she meant but I tired to convince myself she meant that Patrick Stewart was ripped.

This one really packed a punch today. Just like Walter I found out while I was working. Hard to concentrate both days. Its sad to see our childhood star trek heroes pass. We have the shows to give us comfort but as they leave us it just feels like the earlier versions of star trek are slowly fading into history. But the inspiration, role models and morality they taught us will remain. I hope younger and future generations discover them.

I don't get broken up by actor deaths anymore. But this one is absolutely gutting. Sir Patrick was a treasure, a truly lovely man and a towering talent. He was the glue that held TNG together in those early days, a lead who showed that Star Trek could survive beyond the original cast. He was the kind of actor who comes along so seldom, and who could transcend the genre while still lovingly embracing it. We were blessed to have him.

So many great performances to choose from, but sticking primarily with Star Trek, I'd most likely jump to Chain of Command and The Inner Light.

What a gut punch this week has been.

This one really does hurt more. While I loved watching TOS reruns in the 70's, then of course the movies, TNG was my adult Star Trek that I had the joy of watching from day 1.

At first I wasn't sure about this stuffy Shakespearean actor playing a Star Trek captain, but damn he really sold it. We got 7 years and 2 more movies, then the bonus of 3 great seasons of Picard.

And that's not even talking about his spot-on portrayal of Professor X. One more example of the near perfect casting in all the Marvel movies.

Most celebrity deaths are a case of "oh that's sad" "oh that's a shame" but this is a different level. The Berman era of Star Trek was my childhood and Captain Picard was the torchbearer up front.

I never really had many friends growing up so Star Trek was a substitute for that and I dont think it would be too much of an exaggeration to say that it would have shaped my development, my morals and my perceptions.

Captain Picard is definitely a part of why I am who I am today so Sir Patrick's passing is profoundly more upsetting than just someone who gave a few performances I liked.

I found out about Patrick Stewart because of a silly AI generated reel in my Youtube feed of Chekov and Picard sharing a drink in the Nexus. I thought it strange and something triggered me to check an actual news source, and that’s where I saw the reporting of Stewart’s passing.
