The ACTUAL Enterprise G

Sovereign class.
Oh right, I dislike the design enough to forget of its existence. Though even there they tinkered with the design to add more of a back of a neck to it, and it had a neck in some of the graphic novels. Still it a secondary hull, and didn’t have the Akira pontoons, torpedo pod they made into random tech thingy in ENT, and nacelle setup.

They heyday of TNG and of Trek was when the Enterprise looked like an Enterprise. Attempts to make it a Porsche, an Akira, a future ship derivative of the NX, a version designed by programmers not artists, and finally a bougie Refit, do not inspire the same level of enthusiasm from audiences.

That's projection and believing you speak for all the audience.
Nah, wish it was. Look at the franchise. The TNG movies fizzled. TATV was a valentine to earlier trek. Kelvin and DSC brought in the necked Enterprise. The Odyssey Class is only taken seriously by gamers. And the retro G did not inspire its own show.

I think issues with ship design is a mirror to the franchise. What they come up with there says something about what they’re offering overall. TOS, TNG, those legends of old were bold explorers of the great unknown in starships that were vaguely anthropomorphic, with their heads, necks, bodies, and limbs.

As they tried to be more kewl and gimmicky, the franchise lost some of its verisimilitude, legitimacy, ability to inspire beyond those of us diehards still here on these turn of the millennium message boards.

Damn. That's a lot of pressure on ship designs.

You're still projecting. You are A fan. Not THE fan. And ship design has never been a mirror of the franchise. Well, perhaps to those fans that thinks Star Trek is about starships and nothing more.
Anyway, this was fun. Dutch people with work in the morning need sleepy times.
Feel free to keep this going but Imma bow out and leave you as the winner of this conversation that has no merit. I need my beauty sleep. Because I'm kinda ugly so I need every minute of it.

I think it goes to the idea of versimiltude within the world. Many fall in love (loosely speaking) with the environment of the world. That this is a world you can step in to, feel a part of, and want to be in. Starships are a part of that and for many add to that real feeling. They're the avatar of the adventure in some ways.

I personally don't share that. Ships are probably the lesser important aspect to me of world building, something I owe to years of reading books and Imaging far different ships than probably intended by the author. So the idea of a ship reflecting an ethos of the show is one I find odd. Or something simply outside my consideration.

What draws me in to Trek was the characters then the shipboard environment. Characters interacting with the environment on the daily sold the reality and made me want to participate in it. I recall utilizing Mego figures to create my own character and imagine being with the crew.

Very few ships inspire me to go, "I want to be there." I don't believe anymore that ships like the Enterprise are feasible so I grow less interested in the design and more interested in the environment and people.

Fans love different facets but I'll always struggle with tech/ships over people

No offense, but this is absolutely ridiculous. The average Star Trek fan (i.e. no one who posts on the TrekBBS) doesn’t care what the ships look like or have any affinity for their designs in relation to what show or movie they are used in. You are severely confusing die-hard Trekkies like you and me who have shiplists and tech manuals for the actual viewing audience, who are only watching the show to be entertained and don’t give a crap about the technical aspects.

Ship design in Star Trek is utterly irrelevant to me. When I saw the arguments about how the JJ Abrams movies totally redesigned the Enterprise or whatever, I had to admit that the redesigned look went entirely over my head. My complaints with the movie were on the story level, not the aesthetic level.

Nah. If that were the case, they'd just use the ships and sets and uniforms, etc, from TOS again and again, and not give a toss about hiring designers to come up with new stuff. Stuff that speaks to the audience they're hoping to reel in using every element of the show. That's filmmaking in general. People obsess about what pair of sunglasses the protagonist should have on, why? Because it does in fact matter, if in ways that are not immediately obvious. Art, I think, is alchemy.

I get that. One friend of mine on this board is very similar. Can barely tell ship classes apart, or indeed faces of different characters. But that's not the majority of fans. That is, thankfully(!), as I really love the ships.

Nor is it just a nerd thing. For some it's different Enterprises, for others it's the Millennium Falcon...and for others it's real world cars, or jewelry, or sneakers, or what have you. All these things matter to some more than others, but they all ultimately matter or they wouldn't be a thing. And what gets put into them, their esthetics and design philosophies, engage with the viewer in different ways.

I see there is no getting through to you. So I will gracefully bow out of this conversation.
And I made an effort to explain what I thought to you despite acknowledging that you were probably still just ornery after our interaction in the PIC thread, but okay. You want to be passive aggressive and not either try to understand what I'm saying, or leave it at that we simply have different opinions and that that's okay.

Who on Earth was enthusiastic about the TNG Enterprise back in the heyday? Go find some usenet threads and they will be full of "These people don't GET what this ship is SUPPOSED to look like!"

The beloved Excelsior class was The Flying Bathtub.

Thankfully I never heard anyone say anything bad about the TMP Enterprise. Because if those people exist they are difficult and insane.

I'm also pretty sure that even if people didn't care for the design of the ship, it didn't stop them from watching the show. I mean, I hated the design of the NX-01, and I still watched ENT. I also hated the Abramsprise, yet I saw all three films.

They're both still ugly as ships go.

Thankfully, Star Trek is more than ugly ships.
