It's where some businesspeople you've never met, who currently possess the legal rights to a work of fiction, are able to tell you how you should regard it.
This might sound silly - "fiction is fiction," you might think, "it's all stories. I can reintepret, modify, and enjoy it however I like, as can anyone else." That sounds reasonable and is how people have approached fiction for millennia, but unfortunately, it is not the case - Paramount's secret police will be dispatched to deal with any subversives.
They got me the other week for simply thinking the thought "I don't like how Picard's written in 'Perfect Mate', I'll probably skip this on the next rewatch"; they came over and forced me into that Clockwork Orange eye-opening machine to make me watch it until I recanted and pledged to always keep every line of 'The Perfect Mate' in mind when watching any other work of Star Trek ever produced.

How is not watching much media a virtue signal? I know I have a tendency to overthink media so I don't watch a lot. That's me trying to manage my shit not a commentary or judgement on anyone else.

I know you're likely joking, but I enjoy Trek as a whole very much.
Very broadly. There are certain shows and episodes that don't appeal to me, but as a whole I love the franchise. But I am legitimately confused as to how someone could enjoy Trek if you can't ever watch and enjoy what a good villain brings to a story.
Because of the heroes.
That's fair, and I love the heroes in Trek, but they are only part of the story. There wouldn't be much going on in the episodes and films if it weren't for the villains.
True enough but I'm not watching for the villains, personally nor do I find them compelling by themselves. The heroes are compelling by themselves.
They really aren’t. If they never have anyone to play their values off of, it would get pretty dull, pretty quick.
Nobody enjoys Star Trek. The best you can hope for is to survive it.
I see what you're saying, and I respect that. I just don't think that's how most people watch movies or TV shows. Personally, I can hate what someone like Khan or Garak is doing, and yet still be compelled by their performances because Ricardo Montalban and Andrew Robinson just give brilliant performances and they are both so well written.
