News Season 2 will be the last (show cancelled)

No one's been alienated except for a vocal minority who use YouTube to rile up the fanbase.

Roddenberry was lashing out because Paramount removed him from authority over the movie after TMP. Meyer could have done thoughtful and introspective movies about a Starfleet which really was some sort of futuristic NASA and not at all militaristic and Roddenberry would still have insisted that's not what Star Trek is supposed to be.
Actually, GR was lashing out because in 1969 he sold the STAR TREK IP rights to Paramount and didn't get a dime from the successful marketing and merchandising Paramount did with TOS in syndication.

Plus when GR started Lincoln Enterprises to sell some Star Trek memorabilia and Trek related merchandise, Paramount sued him and eventually settled where he paid some royalties and licensing fees to continue.

GR really tried hard to make and get TNG to completely replace TOS in the minds of Star Trek fans (,because Paramount gave him full control of TNG and a large slice from the merchandising of TNG), but he wasn't as successful in that regard as he hoped he would be because he still got no money from Paramount merchandising of TOS.

In 1969, when the show was cancelled, who would have imagined there would be any dimes generated by Star Trek? He made what seemed like a sensible decision at the time. And it's not like he lived a life of poverty and deprivation afterwards.

I seem to recall that there was some debate about whether Lincoln had the right to sell some of what they were selling, like scripts written by people other than Roddenberry, among other concerns.

Well, like I said, Paramount didn't "win"; both sides settled and Lincoln Enterprises went on - but GR still felt screwed over.

Ugh. At least there will be more Starfleet Academy novels, perhaps?
"More?" There hasn't been a Starfleet Academy novel yet, not one which ties in with this show anyway. And as of writing this post, the only Star Trek novels scheduled for the remainder of 2026 are a TOS novel and a DS9 one. No novels are currently scheduled for 2027 besides a paperback reprint of a Picard novel released as a hardcover earlier this year.

I see. I know about the DS9 one because I'm going to be pre-ordering it

Just wow. I still remember getting two books a month in the 90’s.
