Is it time to put Star Trek to rest?

Really? Somewhere I read Paramount considers Star Trek part of their "crown jewels".

Yeah, I think there’s a chance. Maybe not a good one but depending on what happens with the merger and the evolving media landscape I would expect them to at least listen to offers.

Say the merger goes thru and they are many billions in debt (what was it 90 billion or something) and noted Trekkie Jeff Bezos comes in and offers 5 billion (at least, I dunno what a valid offer would be) for the entire franchise, I think they’d be open to it.

So, he saw which way the wind was blowing and switched sides? I'm sure it must have seemed like a good idea at the time.

Major Kira would call him "a collaborator".

I believe Kira also learned more than once that being a collaborator can be a much more morally grey proposition than it first appears.

Look, I've just chosen to be optimistic about David Ellison until proven otherwise. He's moving his networks to the center, and I understand the logic of it, assuming he's on the up and up. He hasn't done anything beyond the pale yet.

Star Trek is going dormant.

And the peasants rejoiced.
That may be A Very Good Thing. Give DIS, SFA, PRO & SNW time out in the streaming sphere to build an audience of new fans, then follow with a full-length feature in 2031 for the next anniversary. TOS is as relevant to them as Commando Cody: Sky Marshall of the Universe was to young us.

Then so was Roddenberry and every other person associated with the franchise. None of them are doing it for free.

Yeah, I find it annoying when people act like Trek before Kurtzman and Co. was being done by people out of the goodness of their heart without any personal financial considerations just because they loved it so much when the reality was: it was a job and it paid the bills. Doesn't mean they didn't enjoy the job, but in the end, no one there was working for free or less pay, nor would they have. Trek has been "product" since day one.

So you’re saying no one should commit mass suicide, yet?

Jumping to conclusions, assuming "there will be another decades long hiatus", for no reason whatsoever than this had happened before, is ... highly illogical.

Or rather, mere speculation.

Star Trek may not be their most important asset, but nevertheless an important one, and they will try making money with it, rather sooner than later.

That remains to be seen. Everyone is doom and gloom about Ellison I dont know much about him but I don't see how his politics will affect Trek one way or the other. I just want to see a consistently well written show.
Someone willing to put personal gain over any sense of morality just doesn't deserve to be supported. My own bitterness and spite are also motivators I will admit.

Well like I said I don't know much about the guy. I just looked him up and he wants to make it a movie franchise again. I don't know what his morals are. I'm sure like any studio owner money is the bottom line. But again, I just want to see well crafted scripts. I didn't think we got much of that with SFA. There were some elements of SFA I did like but the writing was all over the place and it didn't feel very cohesive to me. I didn't really know what the show wanted to be.

and just start a brand new timeline in a new star trek universe with new storylines casts crews ships planets aliens tech and histories

Build a new franchise if you want, why bother restricting yourself to existing characters and species if not to build on the thousand episodes of previous storytelling.

Seth MacFarlane did it brilliantly.

His politics have already affected other shows owned by his company. Colbert was fired. CBS news now has a Trumpist as news director and as the lead anchor on its evening news. I don’t want to get too much into politics here but it doesn’t exactly bode well for free media if it’s controlled by the purse strings of a presidential administration. That’s called state-run media.

What about scripted shows?? Has he done anything to existing ones yet?

Well yes I guess you could boycott anything from Paramount (and soon Warner/HBO, too), which would maybe be a highly moral thing to do ... but I'm afraid I'm too much of a collaborator myself to go *that* far.

Star Trek just means too much for me, and as long as they don't turn it into an explicitly pro-Trumpian propaganda show, I'll continue watching it.

20 years ago, I was very much opposed to Bush's actions, too, and absolutely detested that they made the first half of ENT season 3 a big pro-Bush propaganda show, but while I bitched about it online, I kept watching. Paint me guilty.

Maybe a total boycott of  everything is too much of a commitment but certainly boycotting being a paying subscriber is within my power to stick with.

I do completely understand. Of course a reboot under any management wouldn't have my engagement but I'm just too old and too deeply invested to start over from scratch. It would just be ignored by me, I wouldn't start bitching in every discussion. Feel free to quote me on that for future reference.

Alas I was only 14 20 years ago and far too young to know about foreign politics being reflected in a sci fi show.

Not as of yet. But his time in charge is still relatively new. They’ve admitted they’re committed to Star Trek, but as a reminder, Skydance produced the Kelvin Trilogy. While I think those are great movies, they don’t always show the peaceful, welcoming Trek we’re used to.

I think ENT season 3, elements of DSC and Section 31 have a much worse track record in these regards, than the Kelvinverse movies.
