Spoilers Starfleet Academy Episode Preview Thread

The Memory Alpha article on crying mentions the Doctor being programmed by B'Elanna Torres to cry, so I guess it was already canon.

That's kind of ridiculous of a statement. Zimmerman's appearance mapped onto a holographic frame, maybe is that simple, but the aspects of his personality, every blink or twitch, every raised voice or whisper, every shake of the head would have to be programmed. If we think of the Doctor as like a modern LLM, with the added layer of body language and tone, every movement would be calculated as to the probability of its having a preferred medical response (in this case having a good bedside manner to promote healing). Even if poorly done, it would all be extremely complex programming, given how much more advanced the Doctor is. If I am at all understanding the computer science.

Of course, if the Doctor had a preexisting "soul" that was copied from Zimmerman and transcendentally imparted body language to the holographic output, I guess then it's just that. Star Trek A.I. does seem to have a magical quality.
You... Do realize they literally showed us how the Doctor got his bedside manner in Voyager?

And that his program is absolutely nothing like an LLM?

:guffaw:
Is there anything MA won't do an article on?
Wookieepedia is worse.

Edit: Actually, no. Memory-Alpha is worse.

M-A has a separate article on nipples, while Wookieepedia discusses them as part of the breast article.

Wookieepedia also does not have an article dedicated to crying.

Both wikis are still pretty silly with what little thing needs its own article however.

I know it's crazy...but I cry just a little bit

Ugh… I’m not a hater of Academy. I’ve actually enjoyed most of the series so far, but her in this trailer… she’s like nails on a chalkboard.
Tilly is pretty awful. Fortunately, this turned out to focus on the kids and Picardo; Wiseman was a bit more than an overhyped cameo.

Preview images for the penultimate episode of the first season, “300th Night” …

As we’ve come to expect they tell us almost nothing. We only see Ake, Reno and the Doctor on the Athena bridge. Looks like they are taking it out for a spin once more.

Looks like Caleb and Genesis in the BG of the last pic? I think its the rags costume we saw in the mid season trailer.

Maybe Pelia once told Ake about the time she helped steal the Enterprise?

Yeah, I think so too. I have taken a closer look at that mid season trailer again, looking out for shots we still haven’t seen with only two episodes to go.

So yeah, looks like they are going on some mission on board the Athena that requires the cadets to wear civilian clothes. There’s multiple shots of Reno being in command for some reason. Tarima seems to be the only cadet wearing her uniform. My guess is that they are helping Caleb in trying to find his mother. Looks like it has to be a secret or possibly not sanctioned mission.

They then seem to beam down to an alien planet (the article from Perspective Magazine calls the set “Ukeck market”) and get involved in a fight. The Athena appears in the sky and saves the day.

These shots then could be from the finale: There’s several shots of the cadets (this time in uniform) on some shuttle mission, traversing what looks like a wormhole. Darem is puking glitter again and mentions it’s from the Klingon food we see Jay-Den hand out …

… in what looks like a Klingon ritual. The dialog makes it sound like it’s some sort of ritual that binds them as friends. Darem, Genesis, SAM and Caleb seem to be present.

And there’s also some shots that I wasn’t able to place:
  • Looks like Caleb and Tarima are going to meet in their mindspace once again. Note that Caleb is wearing his civilian clothes.
  • There this moment of SAM looking into the sky. Could be when the Athena descends on Ukeck market.
  • A shot of the Athena coming out of warp that I think we haven’t seen yet.
  • Caleb using his tricom badge.
  • And some action shot of a cadet fighting what looks like a Furie. No idea if that is merely a shot from “Come, Let’s Away”, though.

So far, Starfleet Academy has essentially three modes:
  • Big, bombastic action-adventure (1, 6)
  • Theme-heavy character focus (4, 5, 8)
  • Light YA drama (2, 3, 7)

I'm guessing we're due for more of pot a this time, since it seems like we're getting an away mission this go around.

Also, Frakes is directing the final two episodes, so we're in for a treat.

You included episode '7' twice, but I'm guessing that the '7' in "theme-heavy character focus" was meant to be episode '5'?
