Starfleet Academy Starship Thread

I miss Star Wars: Galaxies.

I had a great scout character I had been working on up till They dropped the CU.
(making it so that everybody could automatically become a Jedi was a completely idiotic thing to do)

There's emulator servers making a comeback both pre CU and post CU.

My eyes negate your statement.
I posted an interview in the Prodigy general thread where Aaron Waltke talks about this.

An example Aaron gives in the interview is that when writing Season 1 there was discussions if they'd actually bring in real Janeway. They considered having Riker and the Titan be the ones chasing them, but when they pitched the idea to Secret Hideout, they said they should probably talk to Mike over at Lower Decks first lol.

Sure visually somethings may not line up perfectly, but they were actively working to not step on each other's toes in the story department.

Im guessing the Athena is like a very, very basic ship, seeing how it can't go against pirate ships. Even in the new trailer for the finale looks like it gets beaten the hell up.

I mean, it's one ship against the entirety of the Venari Ral. What would you expect? Besides, how many times did Voyager get beaten the hell up (and then just show up pristine in the next episode if nothing had ever happened)?

Truthfully? Have it take out one of the Venari Ral ships only for two more to show up and overwhelm it.

That shows the ship isn't a pushover, while also showing that it can't fight a war by itself.

Connor Lucas, concept and pre-viz artist on Academy, posted a 3D fly through of the Athena sets on his portfolio page, with a 2D cutaway of the ship showing where the camera is.

it's the first video at the very bottom of this page

Animated tour of the USS ATHENA in Unreal Engine. Toward the end of the season, I was tasked with mapping the different sets at Pinewood and their locations within the ship as a video.

Obviously it's all previz stuff, so subject to change next season and such.

the concept art also uses the 325301 Registry number that's also on the dedication plaque, instead of 392023 that's on the ship's model.

Thanks so much for posting that fly-through video from Connor Lucas! I’ve been fascinated by it for a week now. There’s definitely some inconsistencies with the version of the Athena as depicted on the show — you already mentioned the registry being wrong, but there’s also other little things about the exterior model that look slightly different from the ship as seen on SFA, like for example the rows of windows for what would be the cadets quarters, which are continuous along the inside of the outer saucer ring in the video, but are broken up into groups on the show proper.

But still, that deck plan graphic is the best look into the layout of the Athena we got so far and I love how well thought out they made the inner workings of the ship. This seems to confirm 32 as the number of decks for the ship, although the on-set turbolift graphics say it’s 35 decks. And I love how this includes elements like the massive tubular botany section that follows the curve of the saucer, which was shown in “Vitus Reflux” (even though this shot of the same section being parted in two from the premiere seems to contradict it being there). They don’t visit the set (probably since it’s not a practical set) but if you look closely you can actually see the rather large engineering section in the center of the saucer.

I collected screenshots from the various sections of the deck plan as shown in the video and carefully assembled them into one large, full plan. (Click the image twice for full size.)

I also created this annotated version which calls out all areas shown in the video in yellow and gives a clearer look at the number of decks. In red I added some more points of interest that I inferred myself.

I also used this opportunity to update my own orthos of the Athena, using the outline from deck plan, which makes it much more accurate. I also updated the length of the “wings” and the nacelles based on screen graphics shown in an episode. In my original version they were much too short. The neck I basically redrew entirely, since I was off on a number of details. This also takes into account the various shots of the Athena we got in season one that I didn’t have when I created my first attempt.

Here’s a comparison to show how much changed between those versions. I feel much more confident that this newest version closely represents the ship as shown on the show. On the neck I’m kinda surprised how much I got right, considering I was only able to eyeball it from a few screenshots from the first round of trailers.

What still eludes me, though, is the exact geometry of the nacelles, since we barely saw them in season one and they are not visible on the deck plans. Hopefully we’ll get a good look at them eventually in season two or when they release a model of the ship. :)

What the deck plans also did is finally make me understand how the Sato Atrium is connected to the Starfleet delta window on top of the saucer. Shoutout to @Arvis Tadjik, who already got it all figured out way back when here. So there’s actually a diagonal sort of cavity going from the atrium all the way up to the saucer, which allows an unobstructed view from one end to the other. And the best thing is that you can actually see the cavity in that deck plan. Again, I’m fascinated by how well thought-out that architecture seems to be.
