Also... I'm very confused about why they are sending Cadets out to wrecked starships on training missions instead of just using the holodeck...

Because field experience is better than a simulation. They were doing the same in the 24th century despite having holodecks.

They were very specifically using simulators and holodecks for training in the 23rd/24th century's...

Also no, field experience is not better then a simulation. Because a simulation lets you control and standardize all the variables while maintaining a perfect level of safety.

It was a lot more serious / darker than pretty much the rest of the season so far. I gave it a 9, also my highest grade of the season so far.

It does go to show you, never mention upcoming shore leave...
