Is it time to put Star Trek to rest?

Define "good."
TOS, TNG, DS9 and the first three seasons of VOY.

Plus series like NCIS, CSI NY, CSI Miami, CSI, Stargate SG 1 and Stargate Atlantis.

I do not like Picard (He's always struck me as being a bloviating windbag).
he's not my favorite Captain and not my favorite character in TNG but I actually like him.

!

You've just described Star Trek: Picard.
No I haven't because PIC was the opposite of what I want.
PIC was a gloomy mess, it was like watching a funeral.
What I want and is:

What Star trek should need right now is a new good series!

A series like TNG, DS9 and VOY which would have great, likeable characters played by great actors and great interesting stories with an optimistic view, maybe in the 24th century about 10-15 years after VOY with continuity which could sort out some "loose ends" from those prevous series and also come up with new interesting scenarios.

Up until 2009 it was pretty decent. Ds9 being the one that went away from that formula a bit and it was still AWESOME. But starting in 2009 something started to go wrong. It hasn't improved imo. After watching SFA I think more than ever Star Trek needs a HUGE break, reset or just plain end. Lots of long running shows/concepts start to get stale. Star Trek is no different. It's WELL past it's heyday and it's not gonna ever get it back.

Wrath of Khan, The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, Generations, First Contact and Section 31, right?

So...Lower Decks...

I saw that happen in real time with Enterprise. I just don't get it.
I think to some extent it's just a function of the passage of time and the aging process, not unique to star trek or tv in general. I have an increasingly fond overall memory of high school, despite being objectively miserable at the time (and having the overwrought journals to prove it).

Enterprise got a lot better and my recollection is that people started to change their opinion on it while it was still airing. Plus the Berman era is so different to the Kurtzman era that I can imagine that someone could enjoy the worst series from one era more than a good series from the other era.

Yes. I blame superhero movies. Because sci-fi elements are now super mainstream (everyone has laser guns now), but sci-fi stories are as rare as ever.

You seem to have an axe to grind in terms of superheroes.

The phenomena you’re describing there goes back to 1977 and Star Wars. Arguably even further.

I get the impression from many Star Wars fans that it is the six first movies which counts and that there is a certain dissapointment with later productions.
Which is hilariously inaccurate. Even the first six are not completely agreed upon. The Clone Wars, Rebels, Bad Batch and Mandalorian all have positive regard. The Prequels still battle against the poor reception initially.

Do Star Wars fans actually like the prequels now?
Yes, ridiculous as it is. Still mixed but the Clone Wars series aided that perception.

Lately, it feels like the franchise projects a future where one culture has simply absorbed all the others. And to be honest, that’s not just hard to relate to, it’s a less interesting future to imagine.
True, The Discovery crew did not come across as very diverse nationally, too many of them seemed to be North American humans. Not one fake Scot or Russian in sight.

Thats certainly an opinion. I for one cannot stand procedurals and don’t find Stargate aging well. TOS and Ds9 are great. TNG has its moments but is not as good as we remember it to be. And never have been a fan of Voyager.

But that is just my opinion. There’s no universal definition of “great” when it comes to art.

This.

Clearly the answer to the original question is no. There are enough folks out there that enjoy it.

If it isn’t for you, just go watch something you do enjoy. There’s a lot of good TV out there.
And this.

Discovery actually tried, Michael's upbringing on Vulcan is pretty interesting even if its not a real life nationality.
I agree, the idea was pretty exciting. Also, I don't think execution did it justice.
I did, however, really enjoy Saru's character arc.

This is true for some things. But I remember liking Enterprise. Not 100% loving it. I had some complaints but they generally tried to keep it fresh and within Continuity. Yes the last season a few episodes incorporated a lot of TOS elements into it. But they did it well and believable and I really enjoyed the show as a whole. Even liked the theme. 😂

9 years after the debut of Discovery and I still don't care for the show with Season 5 being the only one I fully enjoyed. If the show has been like Season 5 from the beginning I would have had zero issue with it. Without the time jump and keeping within basic continuity that would have made it even better. But alas that is not what they chose to do. But at least that last season was good. It felt like Star Trek to me. But I don't think Disco will ever "age" to where people look back and say ..WOW that really was a great show. Enterprise got better and better but ended on a sour note of course and 22 years later people STILL hate TATV. The passage of time did nothing for that episode. 😂
