The logistics of that last scene with Jay-Den and one of his fathers didn't make much sense to me TBH.

His father destroyed the beacon before Jay-Den could contact the Academy with his decision. We also know the beacon is still in bits because Jay-Den is messing with it in the present. So how did he get a hold of Starfleet?

Maybe he was able to get a message out at the trading post that was mentioned earlier in the episode?

But, yeah, I actually did have the same thought.

I don’t think it’s unreasonable to think there are communication devices, ships coming to the planet for trade, and so forth.

One would assume that there are multiple ways to contact Starfleet Academy, however the way Jay-den looked visibly distraught when he saw the wreckage did imply that it was more important than just a trinket.

Am sick, and the weather sucks, but I think I have enough working brain cells to say I am coming to a conclusion about this series.

It's well acted and directed

I am surprised at the quality of the directing of all episodes. There is a willingness to let stories breath, not to over-explain, to have silences. Some of the usual design elements are still there, but they seem tamped down.

It's filtered

The teen drama element is there, but it is tempered. I credit the strength of the older characters here. They remain authoritative even when more of the focus is on the cadets.

It's not deep

It seems like almost all of us figured out the resolution to the Klingon diaspora problem early on. It's going to telegraphic conclusions. Perhaps this series won't be thought provoking, but I feel the other strengths make up for it.

Presumably he could get transport to Earth once he got to Mos Eisley.

These are not the Bynars you are looking for ...

Come to think about it, it’s not even called a “communicator” in the episode. Thar calls it a “Starfleet transmitter”, so I guess it’s more like a beacon Jay-Den could have activated.

The only thing we see it do is play an advert for Starfleet Academy. Is that its main function? Like a really cumbersome flyer to recruit cadets?

I took the story function of the transmitter to be to inform Jay-Den that Starfleet was recruiting cadets, not necessarily to be his sole means to contact them. Starfleet's sending out these beacons like pamphlets.

For Star Trek or in general?
For an alien planet on a television show. It’s not so much the fact that they filmed it in the Canadian forests, but that they were not able to make it look interesting enough, or hide the fact that it’s just an autumnal Earth forest. I don’t know, maybe don’t shoot it in broad daylight, for one thing? Maybe that would have helped to make it look more alien?

As for the real forests in and around Toronto, I’m sure they’re a beautiful place to visit. Just not very alien looking. But again, I didn’t find it to be a huge deal.

Fair enough, it wasn't spectacular or anything and certainly didn't make my heart sing with joy at seeing an alien world. That said, of the many, many issues I have with Starfleet Academy, this one didn't actually bother me so much. It was a random planet (I think, right?) and that random planet can, if it so desires, in its heart of hearts, look like Toronto in the autumn. With a filter. I guess.

Totally. Krios is a previously mentioned world in Trek, but never before shown, IIRC. This is not about canon or continuity for me. I just care about the shows I’m watching looking as interesting as possible. It just looked a little … mundane is all, them strolling through the rustling leafs. Maybe what also subconsciously influences me is the fact that Canadian woods apparently don’t look all that different from the European woods I’m accustomed to.

EDIT: Oh, I'm misremembering. Apparently we did see Krios before.

Yeah, I get you. D'you know what it is I think, it's the species of trees. It's very unlikely that any other planet is going to have oaks and elms and, erm, presumably maples. Or perhaps not even trees. They're not even that old on our planet (relatively speaking, that is, I wasn't there but Earth has been tree-less for around 90% of its time). Still, I do need to remind myself that this isn't hard science fiction that relies on such details.

A strangely interesting point of discussion :D

A lot of attempts to make things "alien" look fake and stand out, unless you have James Cameron Avatar money.
Yep. Other than location shooting, Trek planets outside of a few films have never looked convincingly real. Exotic, sometimes, but not real.

The AR wall seems to be their best solution.
