So the phaser somehow knows it is not a person and changes function to hit the replicator, causing it to release smoke somehow, instead of beaming it away? How?

I'd say you need to define what you think it happens when it hits a thing that is not a person.

I think it would teleport out material and create a big fiery mess.

I certainly don't think NOTHING would happen

It's got to be calibrated to only work on people, especially since it teleports their entire body and their clothes, as opposed to just transporting their spleen away or whatever.

If it transports material that isn't organic or directly attached to organics, then every time you miss a shot and hit the wall, part of the concrete would end up in the penalty box, if not literally the entire wall.

In a society where a transporter buffer can be contained within a commbadge smaller than a pinky finger I think a phaser that can teleport subjects isn't that big a stretch.

That's the issue being raised though, right? There are a million explanations as to how the phaser would work perfectly when aimed at a person, but few that then simultaneously allow it to also damage a replicator in a way that fills the room with smoke, while not having any effect at all on other objects or infrastructure it's aimed at.

Admiral Vance may have changed the title for the head of Starfleet Academy to Chancellor from Commandant, probably to attract Ake to the job and avoid confusion, because the title Commandant might be reserved for the Commander of the War College. Just my opinion until they say something else in the show.

Only if someone chabged it from chancellor to commandant after 2401

I thought the first two episodes were decent. Is it my ideal version of Star Trek? No, but for what it's trying to be it wasn't a bad start. Episode two in particular showed promise that they'd do decent standalone stories that could appeal to me. And its heart was in the right place, even if I struggled with some of the execution (the use of 21st century slang, which I'm just going to have to get used to.

I struggled with this one. I don't have a problem with doing a whole episode about a feud with the War College, but it just felt like it dragged. It was a whole hour long but there wasn't enough there for me to justify the runtime. A few decent character moments, but not much (I guess Reymi came out of it as a better character than before.) I got so bored during the laser tag showdown scene in the middle, which seemed to go on forever and wans't very exciting to watch. So while the episode didn't RUIN STAR TREK FOREVER or anything it didn't exactly thrill me.

I hope they give Sam more than just comedy screaming and such in the future. There's a lot of discussions in this thread about why she does the thing she does, but I wish they had those discussions in the episode. For such a long runtime they really didn't do much.

I would like them to tone down the zaniness of the adult characters a bit. It makes sense for the kids to be a bit more zany (they're kids!) but when EVEYRONE'S zany all the time it just seems like they all exist in a default zany reality.

On the plus side, I like Reno a lot more here than in Discovery. She actually cares about things here.

Jay-Den had a few funny moments. Again, though, considering how long the episode was I wish we'd got to know a lot more about him this week.

One of the companies I used to work for changed my job title 3 times in 10 years, and the job was the same. I finally when to work in a different area of the company, before they changed the title for the 4th time, and made it professional instead of union, so they could avoid paying overtime, and stayed in the new position that still paid O.T.

Maybe the phaser has targeting sensors that can detect if it's been aimed at a living target or an inanimate object or there's a lethality setting which caused some components to be transported away then transported back incorrectly causing the replicators to malfunction. Basically, like what happened to Commander Sonak and the female officer in TMP but with replicators.
