Spoilers Starfleet Academy General Discussion Thread

I wonder if we'll see more of the ship in action.
Design wise it kind of feels like an outdated design f the ENT-J is anything to go by.
The trailers show what looks like the central part of the Athena's saucer section engaging a fleet of Klingon ships alongside a fleet of Federation starships

I'm not amazed by the first two episodes, but I found them decently entertaining. I rated both episodes with 7/10.

The start is definitely more entertaining than DSC imo, I like the tone of the show and that they include the Holodoc as a nod to the old fans, but so far, I don't find Caleb particularly relatable or interesting, rather a bit annoying. But from what I've gathered, the other cadets get more attention in the next couple of episodes. I'm looking forward to that.

I'm particularly happy that my oldest daughter is interested in watching SFA with me, as I failed to get her interested in the older Trek shows (the only other Star Trek she likes so far, is LD).

Just two episodes is perhaps way too early to properly judge the show, but right now, I'd place it somewhere in the middle field of my personal ranking of all Trek shows -- behind the classics, SNW, LD and also ENT and PIC, but ahead VOY, DSC and S31.

Looking forward to next week!

Cool interview! Noga Landau seems very likeable and enthusiastic about the show and its characters. Here’s the bits I found most interesting …
  • Voyager is her favorite Trek show and she says everything she learned about storytelling, she learned from Star Trek. Seems like she was flabbergasted meeting Kate Mulgrew at the Blue Carpet event.
  • Lura Thok was originally two separate characters: the female Jem’Hadar/Klingon cadet master and a male first officer. She doesn’t want to reveal who they wanted to cast for the first officer, because they still want to bring him on for the show.
  • They are taking a cue from how Deep Space Nine handled ongoing story arcs, in that the show is episodic, but there’s overarching season-long arcs that get revisited every so often.
  • Like classic Star Trek they are doing “bottle shows” to save money, using those to do episodes driven by “Trek dilemmas, moral questions, crises, character moments”.
  • Season two was greenlit when they were shooting episode three or four of season one. Considering they’re filming the final episode of season two right now, I guess this means they should have gotten the green light for season three at this point, if it were to happen. (Assuming the studio decision would follow the same pattern.)
  • Like many of the reviewers she’s repeatedly talking up episode five (which will be the homage to Deep Space Nine), calling it her favorite of the season. I’m starting to worry it won’t be able to live up to all the hype. Ever the optimist, I know.
  • She’s hinting there will be a cameo of a legacy character in season two that “we haven’t seen in a long time”.
  • She says one thing that kind of worries me as well: “We love doing nods to other Star Treks. That’s the point. It’s 60 years old. It’s some of the best stuff that we do this season is the nods to the legacy shows and is the legacy characters.” I mean, I’m as much a fan of well-done homages to the older shows as the next fan, but I think it should be done sparingly and should not be “the point” of the show. Please just focus on your new characters and your own story!

Would not be surprised if its someone like Rick Worthy or Mackenzie Astin, more the former. He's got Trek history but hasnt been in NuTrek

I'm actually a bit worried that there has not been a word about a season 3-greenlight... On the other hand, it would be illogical for a studio to green light three (!) seasons when the show has just premiered. Maybe the studio execs want to see how it's performing before green lighting a third season. Having said that, I am also worried that NOTHING has been greenlit ever since SFA S2 (which was a long time ago). There have been so many rumors going on, from an Admiraal Archer series to the Tawny ST comedy to a Year One series etc., but nothing has been greenlit since the Skydance takeover... That seems a bit concerning...

Season 2 getting greenlit when it did was the unprecedented move. Granted, there are legitimate reasons to worry a season 3 might not happen, but the lack of news at this very moment when the second season is still filming and the first two episodes of the first season have just aired isn't a sign of anything.

If they don't want to reveal the actor because they want to bring him on in the future tense implies he is not in the two guaranteed seasons.

A legacy character not seen for a while eh? Narrowed down by needing to be extremely long lived unless if it's a flashback or historical archive or hologram of course in which it could be absolutely anyone.

I'm genuinely struggling to think of who could fit this category (besides hologram/flashback/historical), besides Pelia, Q, or Guinan. Though, I suppose Cheronians have a rather extended lifespan as well and that Cheronian Cadet is a rather large Checkov's Gun considering their position in TOS.

It could also be Wesley. I would laugh so hard if he pops up as the Traveler lol

Well, he did in Prodigy. But that would bring up the question of why weren't Travelers protecting the timeline during the Temporal Cold War? I had assumed Wesley's line in Prodigy that the Travelers had abandoned this timeline was the answer.

I see the Burn as more of an attempt to “revert” the galaxy ala Fallout and the destruction of Shady Sands. Before the Burn, TNG and DS9 had made it seem that the Milky Way or at least Alpha Quadrant had become too known and civilized. The Burn returns it to the Wild West of the TOS era.

I would assume so as well, but the Travelers are arguably more enigmatic than the Q. Honestly, it wouldn't shock me for Wesley of all people to go "Ok, now we're talking guys" and pop in. I sort of hope they don't go that route, unless the Travelers come back for a good reason. Considering they can travel time so easily, it seems possible to me that his comment could have been a sort of "push in the right direction" so to speak. Like a Q lesson. He did sort of give that Q feeling too in Picard.

I do hope it's someone else, that we genuinely haven't seen in a long time.

how many fingers does this guy have???

I'm impressed Giamatti could get such fluid movement with all that metal on his hands. I didn't even notice that he had THAT many rings.

Not sure how I’d feel about that, but sure, there’s a possibility that they show up. There was this interview with Kurtzman a few weeks ago where he said something to the effect of wanting everyone from Discovery at least once on Starfleet Academy. And then there was this photo of Sonequa Martin-Green visiting Kerrice Brooks on the set of Starfleet Academy, which could theoretically have been made during the filming of such a cameo.
I think more likely is that, by all accounts SMG is a humdinger of a human and when offered the chance to visit the set and meet the new cast, she jumped at it because she is just.... a really nice person.
