Exclusive Clip

I'm going to be honest here. There was a time when TNG and 90210 were on the air the same time and in the LA area aired at 8:00 and 9:00 respectively on Wednesday night, and my girlfriend at the time and I would make an evening of it. And, yes, it was teen drama. And, yes, some of it was very silly. And yet at the same time, some of it was very compelling stuff.
I can’t speak to the Beverly Hills, 90210 comparisons, as I don’t think I ever happened to watch even one single episode. But the comparisons to Dawson’s Creek and The O.C. I find a bit unfortunate and unintentionally revealing, because I watched a lot of those shows as a young adult and on top of being very popular television hits they were honestly just very well written and produced. We should be so lucky to find that Starfleet Academy is written even half as competently, with the kind of compelling characters, satisfying character-driven arcs and often surprisingly deep and meaningful stories that made those shows so popular. Heck, Dawson’s Creek is basically a cult hit that launched international careers, changed the TV landscape and spawned endless memes. I get that teen melodrama is not for everyone and I genuinely understand that it’s not what everyone wants from a new Trek show, but to use this comparison to deride Starfleet Academy (before it has even aired) seems a bit disingenuous to me. I think the more honest reaction would be to realize that the show is probably just not going to be aimed at you and move on.

Knee jerk reactions. They seem to have a vision of "teen drama" that only exists in their heads.

I guarantee a lot of these yahoos who keep up with that "Trek 90210" crap never watched any of 90210, The OC, Dawson's Creek, et al in the first place. They just use it as an empty pejorative to make themselves feel culturally superior.

Or they're just using it as obvious shorthand to say "I hate the idea of this being too much like a teen soap opera and I hope it isn't."

Maybe. I don't know for sure, I'm not in their heads.

How can you have an exclusive when you are Paramount, showing a Paramount clip. It's just moronic.

I wrote a shopping list earlier. It's an exclusive.

I thought I may watch as I'm a glutton for punishment, but 49 seconds was all it took for me to see just more Discovery. Bang pow whizz wooo bang. Entertainment for toddlers excited by bright lights.

And it does look like a Jem'hadar, from East London... next to a big blue blob and a blonde woman eating gravel.

This will be the first new Star Trek where I don't think I'll even try to watch it.

Hollywood really has forgotten how to promote and market TV shows haven't they?
DSC had amazing marketing, so did PIC in a way.
How far it's fallen.

Have they? You yourself were previously talking about how extensively Taylor Sheridan's shows are promoted, so Hollywood still seems to know something of promotion and marketing of TV shows.
Sorry, I was targeting Trek shows with my comment. Startrd with Beyond and seems to continue with ACA. :(

Though the ratio would be much, much better without considering Season 3 (which is probably the single-worst season of Trek).
It's superficial and ran on autopilot.

The thing about "good ones" as distinct from great is that they don't age well because, after half a century, "good enough" is not exactly gripping.

Oh come on, you are talking about a person there! This sort of fatphobic / body-shaming comment is not welcome here. Don’t do it again.

I am fat and have struggled with weight all my life, so I am making commentary. Albeit a bit blunty so I'll elaborate.

This is the future. Replicated food. Good healthcare. All the Treks show people of healthy weight. And that's how it should be. If we are in the future and still suffer from obesity something has gone wrong.

I want Trek to be a vision of what I should be, an ideal world. Setting a standard on healthy life and good behaviour.

Not only that they're in the MILITARY so even in today's world I'm not sure you'd see very overweight pepole enlisted. Having a google the AI tells me "The Royal Navy and U.S. Navy use height/weight charts and a Body Mass Index (BMI) or body fat percentage assessment to determine health and fitness for duty. Exceeding the standards can lead to ineligibility for joining, mandatory weight management programs for serving personnel, and potentially being medically downgraded."

It's just more dumb fuckery from the modern Star Treks. There's a real dissonance to it all along with East London Jem'Hadar. And we should call it out.
