Exclusive Clip

What if you weren't originally overweight but then you put on weight during your career? At what point should they say, "Too fat!" and drum you out of the service?
The girdle that Shatner wore in the TOS movies would like to have a word with you.
The cast, especially Kirk and Scotty, were looking pretty hefty in the movie-era.

IRL, Senior officers usually have their PRT's "pencil whipped". They're allowed to slide. But this isn't real life. I'd like to think in the Star Trek future obesity, like cancer, has been eliminated.

Kirk and Scotty aren't supposed to be fat. But you're not going to get Shatner and Doohan to lose weight. In ST: Academy the obesity is likely part of the reason the person is cast.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say you're probably no prize winning peach yourself, so what give you the right to comment on someone elses body?

No! It looks like Disco and Kurtzman's other filth, which any warm blooded Trekkie knows is NOT regular Star Trek! My angry hate filled YouTube rant is going to go into full detail about all the flaws with this scene and how they spell doom for the franchise. As a preview of what to expect, "origami chicken" is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever heard.

;)

Nah, but seriously, good clip, I enjoyed it. And yes, I actually like "origami chicken."

Hahaha for a second you had me going there.

Yeah, this looks great. Between the trailers so far and this clip, I am excited!!

As an example, for the USN the height requirement for both men and women ranges from 57 to 80 inches, with a maximum BMI of 23% for men and 34% for women. If you were outside the standard but were heavy because of muscle, and not fat, that was an allowed exception.

IRL, if you exceeded the standard, In the USN they put you on a diet. When I was in, for those that were heavy, it was the Atkins diet. You had a card you showed in the Chow line, and they piled on the meat, and didn't give you any carbohydrates. If you didn't meet the standards after a period of time, you got a general under honorable conditions discharge. Usually, if you showed progress in weight loss, your command would let you stay.

One of the things they would do in medical during the evaluation, was to take your height with your shoes on, that would add 1/2 inch to your overall height, Then they would have you remove your shoes and empty your pockets to take your weight. Then they would subtract 10 pounds for the weight of your remaining clothes (that probably weighed only about 2 pounds). They only did my weigh in when I was in recruit training. I was never checked after that, but I also wasn't heavy when I was in my late teens to mid 20s.

Also, if you're overweight, you souldn't be allowed in Starfleet.

I love how people can claim they love Star Trek, a franchise build on inclusiveness and just generally being nice to people and then fans can say hurtful crap like that.
Sure, real life military works like this. This is entertainment from a franchise that is trying to show the world that no matter what you look like, your gender, your sexuality or social status, EVERYONE has an equal place in society.
If that is something that a Star Trek fan does not believe, he/she/they might consider what part of the franchise they don't get.

There's something wrong with the acting. It was kinda bad. The EMH acted nothing like the EMH. This could be the very first live action Trek I'm not watching. Will give the pilot an honest shot. So far, not impressed.

At this point we don't even know if this IS the same EMH we know from Voyager. And if he is, he is now 800 years older and gained a lot of experience. I'm not even the same person I was 10 years ago. And judging from your name, we are of the same age. I doubt you are exactly the same person you were 10 years ago. It would be weird to expect characters we love to remain static. That would be boring AF.
And seriously.... You can't judge the acting of an entire show from a four minute clip.

It's hard to get an accurate idea of the show from an out of context clip, but I'm interested to see what the show is like.

The times they added holo to a word stood out to me though, I wonder if those systems are still new to them? I would think if they were in regular use they would have dropped the prefix after a while. As I said, out of context clip! Maybe they just wanted to call more attention to the future tech.

Not keen on the idea of the academy being a star ship, nor that the whole school seems to be at risk, with students sent to dorms.

The idea of them being earth based, longing to get out there and explore, and savouring the moments they get to be on a real star ship and out of simulators, is lost.

In my opinion, it was a mistake sending the NX-01 out in episode one, instead of the finale to season one, after exploring the blockers and resistance from the pre enlightened Vulcans - lead to stories that were re-treads.

Deep Space Nine committed to being Station based for the most part, until the Defiant came around - so having an earth based school with a starship the students could take turns in, would have helped resist making it yet another starship Star Trek.

I will of course withold judgement as I watch the show...

He's an EMH.

This wasn't good. It doesn't make me want to watch the show. If this is the best they could put together to promo the show, I don't have high hopes for the show.

This has become my biggest source of frustration is the rank hypocrisy in a fandom of a franchise built on the idea of inclusion.

This clip really exemplified just how horribly designed Discovery Era starships are.

It also shows just why Starfleet Academy was based on a planet instead of a starship.
