Spoilers Strange New Worlds jumps the shark... ("Subspace Rhapsody")

Subspace Rhapsody also dealt with character arcs that had been running through the season, such as Spock and Chapel relationship and La'an character development, among others.

Well, obviously I disagree.
yeah, a character arc that mostly did not feel earned or just felt more like sending a message of who runs the show. Sometimes you can tell how good or bad a series is, if it begins to take you away from the in-universe.

One thing I would give buffy credit for, they knew how to do break ups that felt earned, emotional crushing to the soul and feel like you the audience also felt like you lost something and this is after the characters have been together for a good amount of time.

The Chapel and spock break up has none of this and was one of SNW misguided and silliest girl boss moments of the entire series. Seeing just how much we once used to revear Spock as a character in star trek lore, none of that was worth it for him to be dumped so publicly. I would say though that the Laan/Kirk dynamic in the musical stuff does not seem that bad now compared to season 3 Laan/Spock.

When "Subspace Rhapsody" was about to air, I genuinely thought it was a prank or joke commercial. Imagine my surprise when I find out it really IS a musical. And this was NOT a good surprise.

I can't stand musicals. It's just not my genre. So a musical episode of a STAR TREK series was already fighting an uphill battle trying to win me over.

I thought it was just stupid. Just ridiculous and absurd. It's already stretching credibility with how they explained it, but adding in the synchronized dancing? (And even the ships themselves were 'dancing' in space! Just utterly stupid.) And don't get me started with the K-pop Klingons...

Definitely agree this episode was shark jumping.

It's the only episode in the entire franchise I never plan on or want to see a second time.

Hardly, Trek has done worse.
Everyone's got their own line at what they consider credibility stretching. This, for me, definitely was.

And at least with those other episodes that can stretch credibility, I'm actually engaged in either the story or the characters or both. I just wasn't with "Subspace Rhapsody". At all.

Which is likely because of my dislike of musicals in general. (The same way someone who hates horror or creepiness as a genre probably won't like "Where Silence Has Lease" or Schisms".)

That's actually pretty insulting to say just because someone doesn't like a musical they don't like fun.

There's a LOT of fun episodes in the franchise, and they are much better than "Subspace Rhapsody". Just to name a few...

"THE TROUBLE WITH TRIBBLES"
"A PIECE OF THE ACTION"
"A Fistful of Datas"
"OUR MAN BASHIR"
"TRIALS AND TRIBBLE-ATIONS"
"TAKE ME OUT TO THE HOLOSUITE"
"HEROES AND DEMONS"
"BRIDE OF CHAOTICA!"

Oh shut up about this Girl Boss nonsense.

Chapel doesn't even fit that offensive trope.
TOS Chapel wont. As she was mostly sweet. The break in subspace-rhapsody was done because Spock was getting on Chapel's nerves about that internship she was trying to get, so she got mad and dumps him publicly for been a bugaboo.

it is not just the trope, it is a new wave of the trope. Look as long as they ditch this high school nonsense writing in season 4-5, I am good. However this is ''not good trek'' based on lore.

I would not even give this a pass if I see this kind of writing in starfleet academy and that show is meant for teens.
Hardly, Trek has done worse.
Musicals is a genre that does have only 2 feedback. love that or hate that. a musical episode in star trek was always going to be hard to pull off and rail the fandom, but subspace-rhapsody been generic-okay is not the end of the world, just don't compare it to the Buffy musical that was truly excellent.

Darm.... that Buffy musical,so well executed, so so so good. I still remember how enchantingly done the tera/willow scene was or when Spike says or I mean sings...then I will kill her or when buffy sings she was in heaven before she was ripped from it and all that build up to buffy and spike finally kissing for real this time, which became the central arc of the rest of the show.

SNW ain't even close to that.

I feel the puppet episode should fare better because breaking out in songs anyway can be just cringe at a normal level but do I think it will match Angel's Same Time? unlikely.

"Shoreleave"
"Unexpected"
"The Elysian Kingdom" (yes I like it)
"Qpid"
"Elementary, Dear Data" (which is also my favourite episode of The Next Generation)
"Spock Amok"
"Those Old Scientists"
The list goes on. And this isn't even including stories from the sitcom Lower Decks like "I, Excretus", which I've rewatched numerous times over the past few days.
EDIT: Hell, because of the fact that it was an easy-going light-hearted shipbound sister to Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager is full of these whacky, fun stories that just seek to be pure entertainment and succeed. "Worst Case Scenario", anyone?
EDIT #2: CRAP! I forgot about the OG example of a fun Trek story that was pure fun for the sake of it, "The Naked Time"! Ditto for it's so-bad-it's-good sequel episode "The Naked Now".

I loved elementary my dear data. it is in my top 5 TNG episodes of all time and one of the episodes that had me hooked on TNG. I think it is one of the most intellectual social commentary star trek episodes ever done and the Moriarty actor was well cast and excellent in the role.

the scene where Data discovers holodeck Moriarty has become sort of a life of its own by him giving data a drawing of the enterprise ship, still knocks my head off.

Also Dr. Pulaski while not been a popular character, really shined in this episode and I loved how she represented the human wisdom aspect of the episode in contrast to Data's raw machinal intelligence. Now this is good star trek.:)

It honestly does a fantastic job of being pure fun whilst also giving viewers something to chew on social commentary-wise.

Those episodes were fun? Ugh...I did not enjoy those that all. TNG's follow up was even worse.
