Spoilers Futurama Season 12 (9) July 29th

I will say my least favorite episodes of the Comedy Central and Hulu eras are the ones that directly comment on the awfulness of current events, whether environmental, social, or political.

Don't get me wrong, science fiction has always been used as a platform to discuss such issues but Futurama has never been subtle on its commentary and I much rather it focus on the wacky space and time adventures with heartbreaking resonances. That has always been the show's greatest strength.

Absolutely, the heart of the show for me is the characters and wild and wacky universe they’ve created. I’m all here for the wacky space and time adventures!

I'm almost caught up. We've got some classics from the last season like the new Robot Santa one and then the worst ever Futurama episode ever with the toy anthology.

Just out of curiosity, what is the spoiler policy for shows where the whole season is put online at once, but it airs weekly on TV? I was going ask if the people who've seen the whole season to use spoiler boxes for those of us watching weekly on FXX, but then I realized I wasn't sure what the actual rules were on that.

That's why I've kept my commentary to broad descriptions and spoiler coding actual spoilers.

I've long since learned putting all of my thoughts behind spoiler boxes (even broken down into sections with basic labels) are easily ignored for season dumps (Umbrella Academy, Stranger Things, etc.).

Which is why whenever it's one of my own threads, I switch the thread tag to Spoiler and that allows people to talk openly.

"Wicked Human" was probably my least favorite. While I liked the initial premise of Farnsworth dealing with his frustration with religion in contrast to science (another stark reminder of reality), I wasn't enthralled by how the episode played out and the ultimate revelation fell flat for me (but, again, I get the reason for it).

Yeah, I kind of felt that way too. Futurama has never shied away from poking fun at religion, but I felt like past episodes did it much better and in a more funny way. My personal favorite is probably Calculon's resurrection.

Just finished the season. I think this is the most consistently strong season since the original run. There were a few weaker ones, but nothing as bad as we've had in previous revival seasons; overall, it ranged from middle-of-the-road to excellent. (Thank Hypnotoad they didn't do another of those three-segment out-of-continuity things.)

I loved the emphasis on science- and math-driven plots, though I didn't like the "science as a cult" angle in the Rapture episode, or the lack of explanation for why nobody just flew into space to see what was going on right away. (They said the sky was too full of rising people for ships to take off, but they have telescopes and spaceships on the Moon and Mars, don't they? The concept just didn't work.) That and the season premiere were perhaps the weakest. I didn't care for the airheaded "Barbot" character in the premiere, which just seemed like a sexist stereotype. And the Fry-Leela argument felt tacked on to set up their reconciliation in the equally tacked-on Pacific Rim homage, rather than feeling like it actually said anything about their characters.

But most of the rest was pretty entertaining, and of course my favorites were the super-nerdy "The Numberland Gap" and the big sci-fi concept of "The White Hole." (Not the hole itself, which was just a catalyst, but the saga of the duplicates.)

Just finished watching the season myself. Eh, I dunno, this really didn't do much for me. Might be one of the show's weakest. The premiere was the only one which really clicked with me. The rest, to be honest, kind of bored me.

"Crab Splatter" was possibly the best out of the set, and there were a few other interesting ones too. I kind of liked the auto-printing clones in the white hole one. :D

I will say, one bit I did find genuinely funny was in the rapture one, where it was revealed it was actually alien fishermen with Boston accents taking everyone, We then see a light in the clouds, the fishermen react by saying "it's God!" When everyone else thinks they mean God, they clarify they're just saying "Guard" in their Boston accents, referring to the Space Coast Guard.
